Art: Its meanings
There has been a confusion and concrete definition of art since it is, per se, purely
subjective. However, according to different sources, art can be defined according to
following:
✔ The word “art” is from a Latin “arti”, which means craftsmanship, inventiveness,
mastery of form, skill. It includes literature, music, paintings, photography,
sculpture, etc. It serves as an original record of human needs and achievements. It
usually refers to the so-called “fine arts” (e.g., graphics, plastic, and building) and
to the so-called “minor arts” (everyday, useful, applied, and decorative arts).
✔ It is an old and ultimate form of human expression in terms of thoughts, feelings,
and emotion with the use of different medium and form.
✔ It is the holistic experience of human perspective with the use of personalized style
and motivations in creating it.
Ano nga ba ang meaning ng art? In a way, mahirap siya idefine kasi nagkakaroon ng
confusion kung ano yung concrete definition niya kasi nga art is subjective(pag sinabing
subjective, nakadepende sa feelings/tastes/opinion ng mga tao). Pero according to
different sources, pwede idefine yung art according sa mga sumusunod. First is from
Art’s etymology. Art came from the latin word “arti”.
Next is ang art daw is an old and ultimate form of human expression in terms sa
thoughts, feelings, and emotions with the use of different mediums and forms.
Tapos ang art daw is the holistic experience ng human perspective na ginagamitan ng
personalized style and motivation.
And lastly, ang Art kase nag sisilbe bilang record ng human needs and achievements.
Humanities: Its meanings
Generally speaking, Humanities is a branch of knowledge that investigates human
constructs. Furthermore, it can be defined as:
✔ It came from a Latin word “humanus” which means educated.
✔ It refers to the learning of arts such as architecture, dance, literature, music,
painting, theatre, and sculpture (Sanches, 2011).
✔ They are branches of knowledge that focuses on the human opinions, and
relationships (Machlis, 2003)
✔ Humanities is more concerned on how a person expresses his/her feelings. These
feelings can be in facial manifestations or body movements. Laughing, crying,
clenching our fists, curling our toes, stretching out our fingers, and crossing our
arms are representations of humanities (Menoy, 2009).
So generally speaking, ang humanities kasi is the branch of knowledge na nag
iinvestigate ng human constructs(pag sinabing constructs, eto yung object of thought
mo. Ano ba ang object of thought? Eto yung mga nag eexist sa imagination lang pero in
the real world, can be represented or has a model.)
So ang humanities, galing sa latin word na “humanus” which means educated. Pag

sinabing humanities, ang pinag aaralan is yung study ng ancient and modern languages,
art, philosophy, literature, music, etc. Eto yung branch na nag fofocus sa human
opinions and relationships. Ang humanities kasi concerned siya on how a person
expresses his/her feelings.
Art Appreciation: Its meanings
✔ Art Appreciation is a way to motivate ideas and allows individuals to illustrate
their feelings when they viewed an artwork. It helps develops critical and
innovative skills in thinking and teaches essential qualities in listening, observing,
and responding to multiple viewpoints It also requires an ability to differentiate
what is apparent and what is not (Gargaro & Jilg, 2016 and Sanger, 2012).
✔ It refers to the knowledge and understanding of the universal and timeless qualities
that identify all great art.
✔ It is the act of understanding, connecting, and relating on a work of art.
When we look around, we see a lot of things that relate to art. Art can come in the form
of many items such as posters, paintings, portraits, covers, and more. People look at art in
different ideas that they want to know more about or may be studying. Art can shows
ideas about the past, what is currently happening and what may happen in the future. It
can also show meaning, love, boredom, and creativity (Ramos, 2012).
So ano naman ang art appreciation? Well ang art appreciation kasi is the act of
understanding, connecting, and relating to a work of art. Kaya mag subject na ArtApp is
para magkaron daw tayo ng paraan para magka ideas and feel different kinds of
feelings when viewing an art and para madevelop daw yung critical and innovative
thinking, at para maturuan tayo ng mga essential qualities like listening, observing, and
responding to multiple viewpoints.
The Features of Art
When it comes in art, it has a various features that separates itself into other
human creations. Here are the properties that makes art as such:
So pagdating sa art, meron tayong various features na nag seseperate ng art from other
human creations. So una is yung:
1. Aesthetic
⮚ A work of art must exude beauty and must be pleasing to the eyes or
feelings of the observer. Although one may argue that beauty is in the eyes

⮚ So syempre, kailangan yung aesthetic. A work of art must exude beauty

⮚ Pwedeng mapreserve for the coming generations
4. Impactful
⮚ A work of art should be iconic and representative of the human natures and
thoughts.
⮚ Pag impactful, kailangan daw iconic at nirerepresent yung nature and
thoughts ng tao.
The Functions of Art
From the very beginning, arts have been part of human history. It described,
defined, and deepened the human experience. In the Prehistoric period for example,
peoples performed songs and dances to gratify their ancestors. Likewise, hunters brushed
different figures on the walls of caves to depict their day to day experiences. Arts also
serve several functions which are item outcome to its purpose (Menoy, 2009), namely:
From the very beginning, part ng human history ang art. Nadescribe, nadefine, at
napalalim niya ang human experiences. Kunwari noong unang panahon, yung mga tao
kumakanta at sumasayaw either para sa mga diyos/idols na pinaniniwalaan nila. Pero
aside from that, ang art kase may several functions that serve their own purpose.
1. Individual Function- The artists perform arts because of the passion of their
respective art forms. A singer presents a concert for free because of his advocacy
and the love of singing. For example, Regine Velaquez (Asia’s Songbird) is wellknown for possessing extensive vocal range.
Pag sinabing individual function, ang meaning lang naman niyan is, ginagawa ng artist
ang art because of passion or gusto lang niya.
2. Social Function- Man associates with others through his art performance that
arouses social consciousness. Examples of this association are the choral singing,
group dancing, public art exhibits and other practices.
Social function naman ibig sabihin, yung tao ina-associate niya yung sarili niya with
others through his art performance. Example neto is yung kapag may isasayaw ka nung
Prom niyo. Or kapag nagsisimba no diba may mga prayer na kinakanta?
3. Economic Functions- Arts are emerging as a potent force in the economic life of
people assumes an essential role as a direct and indirect contributor to state
economies. Example of this is by generating economic vitality in underperforming regions through crafts, tourism, and cultural attractions.
Pag sinabing economic function ng art, ang ibig sabihin lang naman is yung art may
kakayahan na mag generate ng economy via tourism, crafts, and cultural attractions.
Kunwari sa baguio, aside dun sa Lion and haunted mansion, kilala din sila kahit
papano sa mga walis nila haha
4. Political Functions- Art provides a forum for ideas that will lead to employment,
prestige, status, and power. During election period, for example, the candidates
created their artworks (poster) which expresses their propaganda, agendas and
political views about making a stable society.
Ang art kase diba is nag poprovide ng medium na naglalaman ng ideas natin? So kapag

sinabing political function ng art, diba during election period yung mga candidate
gumagawa ng posters(which are artworks) para iexpress yung agenda nila para sa
society.
5. Historical Functions- Art is an essential technique for information to be recorded
and preserved. It serves to document or reconstruct historical figure and events.
Most arts that are in Museums, for example, are filled with amazing stories about
the world most excellent and most creative people who brought us the treasures.
By looking at a work of art’s colors, materials, and symbolism, we can learn about
the story and culture that produced it in the past.
Diba nga art is a record of human achievements? So syempre since record siya, meron
siyang historical functions. Naidodocument ng art at nerereconstruct niya yung mga
historical figures and events. Example na dito is yung mga museum. Puno ng mga story
and art made by creative artists. Another example is yung MacArthur park sa Leyte. May
statue si Douglas MacArthur kasi finulfill niya yung promise niya na “I shall return”
6. Cultural Functions- Art is an articulation and transmission of new information
and values. Example, when you think of Manila, you probably think of Fort
Santiago, Luneta Park, and its world-renowned churches, or the famous
Intramuros.
Ang cultural function ng art is to preserve and strengthen a community’s sense of
belongingness pati na rin sa pagbuo ng personal identity. So kunwari kapag sinabing
NCR or Manila, ang mga cultural sites na kilala sila is yung Fort Santiago, Luneta Park, or
yung Intramuros. Pwede rin yung Vigan City or yung Rice Terraces.
7. Physical Functions- Buildings are artistically designed and constructed to protect
their occupants and make their life inside more meaningful. Architects, Industrial
and Graphic Designers, and Interior Decorators share responsibility in building
environment that balance forms and functions.
So yung mga building, artistically designed and constructed no? Pero sapat na ba yung
maganda lang? Syempre hindi. Kailangan kaya ka protektahan at kayang gawin
meaningful ang buhay mo.
8. Aesthetic Functions- Any artwork means beauty. It is visual spice for gracefully
adorned interiors and can bring out the most elegant features of different décor
elements. It reasonably reproduced visual images which communicate through
fantastic persuasions and meaningful words.
Nadiscuss na kanina. Ang aesthetic function ng art is.. to provide aesthetic. Para
makapag provide ng visual spice or magkaron ka ng tinitignan na maganda na pwedeng
mag evoke ng feelings.
The Purpose of Art
Creativity or imagination is the primary basis of art. Art is created when an artist
produces a stimulating experience that is considered by his audience to have artistic
merit. The artwork is the visual expression of an idea or experience of an artist, through
the use of a medium (Frank, 2011). It allows expression of the individuality of the artist.

Through artistic endeavors, we can share what is important to us with others and can
learn about the values of feelings of those sharing art with us. Some purposes of art are
the following (Marcos et al., 2011).
Ang pinaka basis ng art kase is creativity or imagination. Ang art nabubuo yan kapag
may artist na gumawa ng something na nag provide sa audience niya ng stimulating
experience. So for one, ang purpose ng art is para maexpress yung individuality ng artist.
1. Create Beauty- Art is an expression of our thoughts, emotions, and intuitions. It is
the communication of concepts that cannot be faithfully portrayed by words alone.
The Artist has considered nature as the standard of beauty. The example of beauty
can be in a snowy mountain scene, and the art is the photograph of it shown to the
family.
So ang art na ginawa ng artist, is yung kung ano yung maganda para sa kanya.
Or simply put, ang standard of beauty ng artist is yung creation niya.
2. Provide Decoration- Artworks are used to create a pleasing environment. It is
intended to beautify things to please and amuse the viewers through its colors and
patterns.
Artworks kase are used para makagawa ng pleasing environment din. Isa sa mga
intention ng art is para mapaganda yung mga bagay bagay para matuwa or
maentertain yung viewers or mga tao.
3. Reveal Truth- Artwork helped to pursue truth and attempted to reveal about how
the world works. It is a kind of language that allows artists to send a message to
the souls of the recipients that help change their attitudes, their sensibility, and
their ethics.
Ang art kasi is our expression of thoughts and emotions. Ang art nakatulong to
para mareveal yung katotohanan kahit papano kasi may mga artwork na ginawa
para makapagbigay satin ng mensahe na pwedeng makatulong satin na baguhin
yung attitude, sensibility, pati ethics natin. Example is yung mga works ni Rizal. El
Fili at Noli. Or yung Spoliarium ni Juan Luna.
4. Express Values- Arts can illuminate our inner lives and enrich our emotional
world. Through arts, the artist will be encouraged to develop their creativity,
challenge, and communication skills. It also promotes self- esteem and wellness.
Ang art diba nga is our expression of thoughts and emotions? Ang art considered
siya kahit papano as communication kasi naipaparating neto yung mga
nararamdaman natin or mga concepts na hindi natin alam sabihin.
5. Commemorate Experience- Art serves to convey the personal experiences of an
artist and record his impression in his work.
6. Create Harmony- An artist makes use of the composition to put an order in the
diverse content of his work.
