References: M. V. Carpio-Bernido and C. C. Bernido, LPON Physics Essentials Portfolio (Author, Title, Pages) LE In this and the next activities, we will study why and how objects move. Describing moving objects mathematically was done a long time ago by the famous natural philosopher, Isaac Newton, who based some of his studies on the works of Galileo Galilei, another natural philosopher. (Nowadays, we refer to the natural philosophers as scientists.) Newton discovered three laws followed by moving objects. We will take up these laws one by one. Term Explanation Motionless, still, not moving Visayan Hindi gumagalaw Wala maglihok Hindi naiiba ang paggalaw, hindi nagbabago ang tulin ng takbo at hindi lumiliko Dili mausob ang dagan o ang kapaspason, ug dili moliko T FO Uniform motion Velocity is constant; speed does not change and motion is along a straight line Natirang puersa na Nabilin nga puersa na Force that is not cancelled out by another patuloy na tumutulak padayon sa pagtulod o humihila o pagbitad force N O Unbalanced force Filipino R At rest S A Newton’s First Law of Motion: The Law of Inertia An object that is at rest will not move unless an unbalanced force acts on it. An object that is in uniform motion will tend to remain in such motion unless an unbalanced force acts on it. Application: 1. When riding in a moving vehicle and it suddenly stops, the passengers feel themselves bending forward as if continuing with the motion. Draw an illustration of this situation. 2. Tell what will happen to a rolling ball on the floor if the floor is infinitely smooth, there is no wall, and nobody stops the ball.
