1. Document your search strategy and rationale for choosing this article. The article “Nutritional interventions for treating foot ulcers in people with diabetes” is a systematic review that aims at evaluating the effectiveness of a nutritional intervention on wound healing of foot ulcers in people with type 1 or 2 diabetes mellitus. This article was found by going to the Cochrane library website and typing “poor wound healing in diabetic patients” into the search bar and selecting the “title abstract keyword”. I chose this article because during this academic session, I have learned so much about type 1 and 2 diabetes mellitus and its role in predisposing the patient to other chronic health problems such as cardiovascular diseases, nerve damage, kidney damage, eye damage, impaired skin integrity, just to mention a few. As a nursing student, I believe it is important to understand the role of nutrition in the wound healing process of individuals with diabetes mellitus. 2. Provide a one paragraph summary of the article, with recommendations for best practice. The article is a systematic review that selected and critically appraised randomized controlled trials of 629 participants on the effects of nutritional intervention on wound healing of foot ulcers in people with type 1 or 2 diabetes mellitus. The researchers have thought that food supplements containing a certain amount of protein and vitamin enhance the healing of foot wounds in diabetic patients. The authors reported insufficient evidence to support or refute the study of whether there is a difference between the rate of foot wound healing in diabetic patients on nutritional intervention compared to diabetic patients with no nutritional supplementation. For best practice, it is recommended that more research is essential to establish the effect of nutritional intervention on wound healing in persons living with diabetes. Although, the authors further reported that studies conducted by other researchers demonstrated a correlation between deficiencies in protein, albumin, vitamin D, vitamin C, and zinc and a slow wound healing rate. 3.
