1. Sell stock photography
One of the most common and easiest ways to make
money from photography is through stock photography .
Stock photos are of common places , landmarks , people ,
or objects , and they are sold on a per - image basis to
people or businesses to use . Some stock photography
agencies such as iStock require an approved portfolio
before you can begin selling . Other stock agencies such
as Shutterstock and 500px let you begin uploading and
selling photos almost immediately . Stock photography
does have some downsides in that you cannot set sales
prices and your commission ( profits ) can literally be
pennies to start . But you can start making some amount
of money relatively quickly . The idea here is to invest
long - term and get residual payouts over time .
2. Sell prints and digital copies
If you have unique or artistic photos , it ' s almost a
certainty that someone out there will want to buy them
from you in either print or digital form . When you set up a
website to share or host your images , be sure it has the
ability to sell your photos . SmugMug is one site in
particular that allows others to purchase your photos .
Unlike stock photography websites , you have full control
over setting the prices of your photos through SmugMug .
However , you ’ ll have to find potential buyers and lead
them to your website ,
3. Sell fine art prints
There are tons of online marketplaces where you can sell
your photos as fine art prints . eBay is the top dog ,
although selling art here can be difficult . Thus , Etsy is a
popular option as it is more centered on selling art and
handmade goods .

4. Sell products with your photos
Consider selling your photos printed on physical products
such as T - shirts , postcards , posters , calendars , and mugs ,
to name a few . Websites such as Zazzle will allow you to
upload your photos and create products with them . You
can then set the price for the product and sell them .
Each product is made to order , so there is no upfront
investment on your part
. Sales commissions can be small

Almost every photographer can use a helping hand , or
someone to fill in for them if they can ’ t do a photo shoot .
Working with other photographers also has the added
benefit of giving you an opportunity to networking and
see how other professionals conduct their photo shoots .

8. Enter photography competitions
Photography contests are a dime a dozen these days ,
which can be good in the sense that some competitions
don ’ t get high visibility . Think local photography contests
held by small newspapers or community centers . This
means that if you have some solid imagery , you stand a
good chance of winning . I ’ ve entered numerous local
photo contests and won all sorts of prizes from cash or
DVDs . Need photo contest ideas ? Check out the Photo
Contest Insider .
9. Hold photography classes
Thanks to the widespread accessibility to camera gear ,
there is an all - time interest in learning photography . Thus ,
there ’ s a growing need for photography skills to be taught .
In many cases , you don ’ t need to be a seasoned pro to
teach photography ( although a level of expertise will help
your credibility ) . The main thing you need is the ability to
clearly and effectively teach basic photography skills well .
Reach out to your local camera store , clubs , community
organizations , and other hobbyist groups to see if there ' s an
interest in photography classes or workshops .
10. Write or publish a book
While simple reading books have gone the way of the
Kindle , coffee table photo books are still widely popular .
There ' s still nothing like flipping through a physical book to
view breathtaking photos . Take advantage of the ease of
self - publishing and consider turning your best body of
photography work into a photo book . If teaching in - person
isn ’ t your forte and your prefer writing , you can also write
and self - publish instructional photography e - books and sell
them as a form of passive income .
