My dad got an LG C1 OLED TV almost a
year ago on my recommendation, and he
loved its color accuracy and its outstanding
display performance.
But in the past few weeks, he had to call
me several times because his TV was
turning
off
randomly
without
any
explanation.
Considering that I made my dad buy this
TV, I decided to help him out to get the TV
fixed.
To find out why this was happening to his
LG TV, I went to their support pages and
talked to a few people in a couple of user
forums about TVs.
Thanks to the several hours I spent doing
research, I figured out what went wrong
with the TV and fixed it in a few minutes.
This article has everything that I tried and
more fixes that have been known to work
for most LG TVs so that you can quickly fix
your TV in seconds when it turns off
randomly.
To fix an LG TV turning off by itself, try
using another electrical outlet. You can
also turn off the power-saving features
like Auto Power Off and Power Off
Timer.
Keep reading to find out when you can try
resetting your TV and how you can do it
with the fewest steps possible.

LG TVs, or any TVs for that matter, don’t
turn off without any reason in most cases,
and one of the most obvious reasons this
might happen is if the TV isn’t receiving the
power it is supposed to.
It could also be that the TV is receiving
signals to turn it off from the HDMI-CEC
enabled device connected to it when the
device hasn’t made a request.
This can happen if the cables are faulty or
damaged, reducing the power the TV gets
and forcing it to shut down.
Check the entire length of all the cables
running to the TV for visible signs of
damage.
:
Replace any power or HDMI cable that was
damaged; I would recommend Belkin’s
HDMI 2.1 cable or the PWR+ C7 power
cable as great replacements.
Try Another Electrical Outlet
In most cases, the cables will be looking
alright, and the power issue might come
from the wall socket you’ve plugged the TV
into.
If you are using a surge protector, try
connecting the TV to the other sockets on
:
the surge protector.
Then try connecting the surge protector to
other wall sockets to make sure it wasn’t an
issue.
If you’ve directly plugged the TV into a wall
socket, try using other sockets and see if
the TV turns off on its own again.
Disable Quick Start +
Quick Start + is a feature that allows you
only to put the TV on standby and never
turn it off completely.
It comes in handy when you want the TV to
power on and be ready to go quickly
instead of waiting through the whole
startup process.
:
To turn Quick Start+ off:
1. Press the Home or Smart key on
the remote.
2. Go to Settings > General.
3. Select Quick Start and turn the
feature off.
After turning the feature off, make sure that
the TV doesn’t turn off again.
Turn Off the Auto Power-Off
Feature
LG TVs have an auto power-off feature that
:
turns off your TV when not in use.
This feature is used to save power typically,
but it can turn the TV off randomly if it
thinks it isn’t being used.
To turn off Auto Power Off:
1. Press the Home or Smart button on
the remote.
2. Go to Settings > General.
3. Highlight Auto Power Off and turn
the setting off.
After turning off the setting, wait and see if
the TV turns off.
Disable the Power Off Timer
Feature
Like the Auto Power off feature, the Power
Off Timer is another feature in some LG
:
TVs that will automatically turn the TV off
after a time that you can set beforehand.
Make sure this option is turned off if your
TV is turning off on its own.
To do so:
1. Press the Home or Smart key on
the remote.
2. Go to Settings > Time.
3. Set Off Time to off.
After turning the timer off, check again to
see if it turns off.
:
Check for a Software Update on
your LG TV
If the auto power off and timer settings are
off, but your TV is still turning off on its
own, it might be caused by a bug in the
TV’s software.
The most efficient way to solve most
software bugs would be to update the
system with the newer versions that fix
those bugs.
To download and install updates on your
LG TV:
:
1. Make sure your TV is connected to
the internet.
2. Press the Home or Smart key on
the remote.
3. Go to Settings > All Settings.
4. Select General.
5. Scroll down to About this TV.
6. Turn Allow automatic updates and
select Check for updates.
7. Wait for the system to find and
install updates if it finds any.
When the TV finishes updating and
restarts, check again to ensure the issue
doesn’t happen again.
Cache Overload
Your TV has limited internal storage, which
can fill up pretty quickly as you install and
:
update apps that you want to use with your
TV.
These apps also create their own caches
of files that they need to access often and
can fill the internal storage.
When storage space goes low, the TV
won’t be able to work as expected and will
turn off to fix whatever issue came out of
not having enough storage.
You must clear the browser and app cache
in your LG TV’s storage to fix this.
Follow the steps below to do so:
1. Press the Home or Smart key on
your LG remote.
2. Launch the Web Browser or Web
:
Engine.
3. Go to its Settings menu.
4. Select Clear browsing data, and
confirm the prompt that appears.
5. Press the Home or Smart key again
and launch the TV’s Settings.
6. Choose Application Manager.
7. Select each app from the list, and
go to its Storage settings to clear
its cache.
8. Repeat this for all the apps on your
TV until enough space has been
freed.
Restart the TV again and see if it turns off
when you watch anything on it.
:
Factory Reset your LG TV
Factory resets are also a valid option but
only go for this after exhausting everything
else on this guide.
Resetting will take the TV back to the state
it was when you bought it, and you’ll have
to sign back into all your accounts.
You will also have to install all apps again,
which would be removed by the reset.
To factory reset your LG TV:
:
1. Press the Home or Smart key on
your remote.
2. Select Settings.
3. Go to General > Reset to initial
settings.
4. Confirm the reset prompt and wait
for the TV to restart.
You can also reset your LG TV without your
remote. Use the buttons on the side of the
TV to navigate through the menus.
After completing the reset, go through the
initial setup again and see if the TV turns
off without cause.
:
Contact Support
If none of the troubleshooting methods I’ve
discussed here work, including a factory
reset, please contact LG customer support.
They’ll be able to schedule an appointment
with a technician who can take a look at
the TV for you.
Once you give them your TV’s model
number and explain the issue, they might
also suggest some more methods that
better suit your model of TV.
:
Final Thoughts
Even if you don’t have access to your
remote, you can still open the settings
menu on your LG TV pretty quickly.
Connect the LG ThinQ app on your phone
to your TV, letting you control the TV with
your phone.
You can also try restarting your LG
TV before resetting it since it’s a quicker
way to fix issues with your TV, but it might
not work every time.
Just unplug the TV and wait for at least 30
seconds before your plug the TV back in to
quickly restart it.
