Question. 1. 2. 3. 4. What are the functions of the heart? Where is the heart located in the body? What are the 3 main layers of the heart? What is the function of the myocardium in the heart and why is it thicker in different regions of the heart? ANSWER : 1. The primary function of the heart is pumping of blood; it receives deoxygenated blood from different body organs and transports the oxygenated blood to all the systemic circulation of body. The heart's upper chambers called as atria, also function to make a chemical messenger known as atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) which functions to regulate the blood pressure. 2. The heart is located in the anterior thoracic region in the human body, and medial to both the lungs. It protected within a protective hollow space called pericardial cavity. 3. The three main tissue layers of the heart are pericardium (outermost), myocardium (middle muscular layer), and endocardium (innermost). 4. The myocardium is the muscular layer of the heart, composed of cardiac muscles and primarily involve in the function to provide continuous contraction for systole and diastole phase of the heart & provide force to pump out the blood. The left ventricle of the heart has thickest myocardium, because if has to pump blood with greater force into the systemic circulation of the body.
