Patient Teaching for a person taking thyroid replacement
I will just like to contribute to the important patient teaching and when a patient taking thyroid
replacement hormone need to notify the healthcare provider. Additional patient teaching can include
Never to stop taking the drug without consulting with healthcare provider as the drug is used to replace
a very important hormone and will probably be taken for life, stopping the medication can lead to
serious problem; Take this medication each day before breakfast with a glass full of water; Do not
change from one brand of this drug to another without consulting your primary health care provider;
You will need regular medical follow-up, including blood tests to check the activity of your thyroid gland,
to evaluate your response to the drug and any possible underlying problems.
The patient is also advised to notify their health care provider if they experience chest pain, Shortness of
breath, palpitation, nervousness, fever, chills, sore throat, weight gain, sleeplessness, excessive
sweating, Headache, increase pulse rate, and heat intolerance.
