No. Questions Marks Section A (Attempt all questions) a. Define Fourier Law. 2 Q1. Q2. Q3. Q4. Q5. Q6. b. How does heat transfer differs from Thermodynamics? 2 c. Define thermal diffusivity and thermal resistance. 2 d. Define steady and unsteady heat transfer. 2 Section B (Attempt any two) A plane wall of 10 cm thickness and 3 m2 area is made of a material whose conductivity is 8.5 W/mK. The temperatures of the wall surfaces are steady at 100°C and 30°C respectively. Find the temperature gradient and heat flow across the wall. Explain guarded hot plate method. A plane slab of thickness δ = 60 cm is made of a material of thermal conductivity k = 17.5 W/m-deg. The left side of the slab absorbs a net amount of radiant energy from a radiant source at the rate q = 530 watt/m2. If the right hand face of the slab is at a constant temperature t2 = 38°C, set up an expression for temperature distribution within the slab as a function of relevant space co-ordinates. Therefrom work out the temperature at the mid- plane of the slab and the maximum temperature within the slab. It may be presumed that the temperature distribution is steady and there is no heat generation. Section C (Attempt any One) Prove that 3 dimensional conduction equation in Cartesian coordinate for homogeneous material , steady state conditions and without heat generation is given by laplace equation=Δ2=0 A homogeneous wall of area A and thickness δ has left and right hand surface temperatures of 0 degree Celsius and 40 degree Celsius. Determine the temperature at the center of the wall. How much material must be added and to which side of the wall if the temperature at the cente is to be raised by 5°C? 4 4 4 8 8 DEPARTMENT OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING B.Sc.
