Congratulations on your role as an Above Restaurant Leader (ARL)! Whether you’re new to your organization, just promoted, or have some
experience as an ARL already, the ARL training program will provide a foundation for success, helping you further develop your leadership
skills.

As you continue through the ARL Curriculum, you will encounter situations with a virtual team of RGMs and fellow Above Restaurant Leaders.

He is not very good with certain
tasks, such as staffing, but has
built a really strong culture in his
restaurant. He is a single parent
and enjoys spending his free time
with his 4 year old daughter.
Ellen does a good job
communicating goals to her team
and achieving them. She’s still
learning some of our KFC systems
and processes, but has done a
good job building the morale in her
restaurant. She enjoys volunteering
at the local animal shelter and has
been recently caring for an elderly
grandparent.
Tenure: 2 Years
Maria is a solid RGM that delivers
consistent results but struggles with
staffing in her restaurant. She’s
been an RGM for the last 4 years
and has consistently provided great
sales and guest satisfaction results.
She is married with 2 kids and loves
to garden.

Brett has been with the company

Recognition is an integral part of our KFC culture and the #1 driver of engagement, leading to the potential for higher productivity and
increased Guest satisfaction. RGMs are the culture leaders for your restaurants, but you cast the leadership shadow that all RGMs will follow.
Activity
Complete the following Recognition Audit, considering your past or present team. Rate yourself 1-5 (5 being the
highest) for each item. When finished, add up your score.
Tip: Share this with your RGMs to help them evaluate their recognition!

Your team is the most important asset you have. Hiring for the right skills and training to develop the right abilities will set your area up for
success.
With Your Coach
Discuss bench planning and training:






What is your role and how is it different from the responsibilities of an RGM?
What is your organization’s process for bench planning and staffing?
What does a bench planning discussion with an RGM look like?
How do you set staffing targets and calculate turnover?
If already in role, create or update your area’s bench plan together. Discuss current and future needs and any action items.
What is your organization’s process for onboarding and training new RGMs?
With your coaches help, reach out to another Above Restaurant Leader in your organization or region:
 Ask questions to learn his/her best practices or tips, such as:
 How does he/she execute the Hiring Process?
 What tactics does he/she use to attract external talent (job fairs, referrals)?

Together, complete the following for each restaurant:

Review the previous RVCL.

Create a plan for your visit. Which of the four visit types will it be?

Follow the “How We Visit a Restaurant” 10-Step process.

Complete a new RVCL and leave written feedback with the RGM or MOD.

Look for recognition opportunities and present at least one recognition card, pin, or prize during your visit.

Afterwards, discuss what you learned with your coach. Were there any surprises, or key take-aways?

We can’t prevent all emergency situations, but we can plan and prepare so that when they do occur, we’re ready to respond quickly and
effectively.

Once you have been assigned your area, it’s time to create your schedule and plan. This will set the foundation for success and ensure you
have regularly scheduled 1:1s with your coach and team.
Activity
Create your schedule for the next 3-6 months. If your organization does not have a calendar system, there are
many alternatives you can use:

 Your smart phone calendar or a free calendar app


Things to consider when scheduling:








Consider weekly, monthly, and quarterly responsibilities, such as 1:1s, business reviews, and bench planning. Refer to TeamKFC for
ARL Success Routines.
Office time or administrative time to plan
Time to get to know your new team
Restaurant visits during all shifts, including late night and on weekends
Flex time between action items and for emergency situations
Work-life balance
Training and weekly RGM meetings
Discuss with your coach how often you should meet and what should be discussed or accomplished
during each meeting
Review your calendar with your coach. Seek feedback on anything you might have missed and if your
schedule is realistic.

With Your Coach
It’s incredibly important to spend the first 6-9 months in role getting to know your new team. Complete the New Leader Assimilation
activity to get to know each other, set expectations, and make for a smoother transition. This should be facilitated by your Coach, HR
Representative, or qualified third party.
Instructions (refer to the Coach’s Guide for facilitator instructions):
Prior to the meeting:
 Agree on a date and time (to least 2 hours), such as during your next RGM meeting.
 Help the facilitator to confirm meeting location, number of participants attending, and secure refreshments and/or lunch, if applicable.
 It is suggested that a social/team building event should follow or proceed this meeting. Brainstorm an activity with your facilitator and/or
team.
During Meeting
 The facilitator will start the meeting with you and your team in the room.
 Introduce yourself and spend up to 10 minutes with a “get to know you” ice breaker.
 Leave the room to allow your team to have an open and anonymous discussion with the facilitator .
 The facilitator will write down questions, expectations, and thoughts from your team. Provide the facilitator with the instructions in the
Coach’s Guide on TeamKFC, if needed.
 The team will be invited to take a 15 minute break. During the break, you will review your team’s responses and comments with the
facilitator and prepare your response. All comments or questions from your team will remain anonymous, with the facilitator acting as
the “voice” for your team.
 When the team returns from their break, the facilitator will prompt you to answer each question or respond to each comment and help
facilitate a discussion around expectations.
