It means to say that no set meter is used in the poem. Meter refers to the equal number of syllables observed in the lines of the poem. In contrast, study this example of a metered poem. I went into the wood one day, (8 syllables) And there I walked and lost my way, (8 syllables) - From “Fairy Story” by Steve Smith For metered poems, the meter provides rhythm. It makes a poem sound pleasing to the ears. To read a free verse, the reader has to rely on normal pauses and natural rhythmical phrases. In a free verse poem, there were no rhyming words used at the end of the lines in the stanza. Instead, the poet uses artistic expressions to add beauty and rhythm to the verses. Doing a choral reading will help develop fluency in reading as well as build selfconfidence.
