Journal Writing Some people believe that beauty is exclusively determined by how a person appears on the outside. Others, on the other hand, value inner beauty over exterior looks. It is tricky to adequately define beauty since everyone has different ideas about what it truly is. For me, being truly beautiful means having a good heart. Someone that is always willing to help others in need. Someone who is selfless and caring to others. It doesn’t matter the size, whether skinny or stout, or the color whether dark, tan, or white. Our body is merely a shell of who we are. What matters is how we are on the inside. The warmth and love for others that we carry within ourselves. Our physical appearance could never define who we really are. Sadly, there are people who base someone’s personality just from their appearance. For example there’s this guy who has a big muscle build and has some tattoos on different parts of his body. Some would find him intimidating or would come off as a violent person. Another guy could be seen as friendly and approachable if he has a lean body and has a clear skin. But we will never truly know who is good or bad just by looking at them. That is why we should never judge someone by their appearance. Beauty can tempt the eyes, but we should always remember to not let our mind be persuaded by it. Being beautiful also means accepting ourselves for how and what we look like. It’s about loving all our flaws and imperfections. These imperfections are what make us unique and different from others. No matter the size, skin tone or if you have scars freckles or acne, we are all beautiful. Unfortunately, in this society that we have right now, it’s difficult to spread body positivity because of these so-called body standards that we must have. These “standards” can sometimes get into peoples’ heads, especially teenagers who use social media. Through various social networking sites, we can see those posts that are given a lot of attention because the person in the photo looked pretty or handsome. When we see it, we tend to envy them then compare ourselves to them, wishing that we looked like them. This leads to trying to change ourselves to be like them. There’s nothing wrong about trying to change for the better. But sometimes there are those who resort to extremes like starving themselves just to lose weight even when they’re already skinny. This often leads to developing eating disorders which is never good and hard to bounce back from. We are easily influenced by what we see online and we crave for what others have. We should never strive to look like other people, especially those that we see on social media. Most of them aren’t real anyways. They mostly look beautiful because of filters and perfect angles. We don’t have those in real life. In real life, being beautiful is all about self-love and knowing our worth. We shouldn’t listen to the negative judgment of others, instead, we should focus on ourselves. We should never pressure ourselves to be something else. Let’s just accept ourselves for who we are, be confident about ourselves, and have a good heart, because for me, that is being beautiful is all about.
