Batangas Tagalog (also known as Batangan or Batangueño is a dialect of the Tagalog language spoken
primarily in the province of Batangas, Quezon, Laguna and the island of Mindoro ("Batangueño/a" refers to
the natives). The dialect is distinctively characterized by a very strong accent and its vocabulary is more
closely related to ancient or "old-style" Tagalog. It is not customary in colloquial Batangan to speak in
Taglish or to infuse English terms as the custom is with Manila Tagalog.
Batangueños are not only infamous for their wide range of vocabulary but also of their
strong diction ❗❓ and playfulness in grammar ✅.

Grammar
Batangueños often use a passive past tense in
place of a present progressive. An example of
this is evident if a person asks someone what he
or she is doing and a Batangueño replies
“Nakain ng isda” which means that he or she is
eating a fish. However, non-Batangueños would
understand this as passive (the Batangueño
was eaten by a fish). The passive past tense is
used then as present progressive.

In terms of morphology, Batangueños are associated with replacing the -an suffix with an -i or -e.
This is commonly observed in imperatives. A Batangueño would rather say “bukse” instead “buksan”,
“sarhe” instead of isara, or “labhe” instead of labahan. In the last example, an instinctive shortening
of the word can be seen, also a very prevalent practice Batangueños use.

They also tend to replace “ba” with “ga” as in “Ano ga?”
instead of “Ano ba”, “dine” with “dito”, “ito” with “ire” or “are”
as in “ganire”, “parine”, and “are ang plato eh” instead of
“ganito”, “parito”, and “ito ang plato”, respectively. The
addition of the “eh” in ending sentences or phrases is also
common for Batangueños as seen in the previous
example.
Their playfulness in morphology also extends to
adding -’y to specific words ending in -a. For
example, “aba’y” and “nga’y” instead of just “aba”
and “nga”. Batangueños also use the prefix “pagka-”
or
morphology
“ka-”
to
their
adjectives.
They
would
say
“pagkagaling” or “kagaling” in place of “magaling”.
These are just some aspects of morphology that the
Batangueño dialect is seemingly distinct from the
common Tagalog or Filipino.

the province.
