Eph. 4:13 • Coordination of evangelism activities: Mathew 28:18-20, the gospel commission is another primary function of the CB, therefore devotes every energy and resource towards every member evangelism thereby influencing them positively hence alleviating most problems or preventing them. • Maintenance of doctrinal purity: Concerning pure doctrine, then, God says to give attention to it; take heed to it; carefully follow it; strive together with other Christians for it; abide or continue in it; hold fast to it; contend for it; and deal decisively with those who don’t. If it matters that much to God, then it should matter that much to us. Yes, doctrinal purity has aims beyond itself. (Math. 15:9; Rom. 16:17, Gal. 1:8; 1 Tim. 1:3; 4:6; Eph. 4:14 CHURCH OFFICERS AND THEIR DUTIES ADVENTIST COMMUNITY SERVICES/DORCAS SOCIETY • Based on Acts 9:36-42 – A disciple of the early church , named Dorcas • 2005 Changed from Dorcas to ACS, by a GC vote. • The department focuses on identifying needs and responsibilities with services based on specific needs through education seminars, community development, visiting, counseling and other services relevant to the community CHURCH OFFICERS AND THEIR DUTIES ADVENTIST COMMUNITY SERVICES /DORCAS SOCIETY • ACS works to foster a strong public awareness of the Seventh-day Adventist Church as a caring, Christ-centered resource in the community. A growing, healthy Adventist congregation works to make itself visible in the community and known as an asset to the neighborhood. ACS programs and personnel are key tools in this effort. • Needs assessment can be carried out with a wide variety of tools: analysis of demographic and other available information, telephone and door-to-door surveys, interviews or meetings with community leaders, focus group research, etc CHURCH OFFICERS AND THEIR DUTIES ADVENTIST COMMUNITY SERVICES LEADER/DORCAS SOCIETY LEADER • Through ACS the church is visible and active in the community • What Kind of “Church” is Nyali West Adventist? The church in the city (community) The church to the city (community) The church with the city (community) CHURCH OFFICERS AND THEIR DUTIES ADVENTIST COMMUNITY SERVICES/DORCAS SOCIETY • The Church in the City(Community) This refers to location. Members are not from the community. There is little or no involvement in the community CHURCH OFFICERS AND THEIR DUTIES ADVENTIST COMMUNITY SERVICES/DORCAS SOCIETY • The Church to the City(Community) This church has a sense of responsibility to do something for the community. It decides unilaterally what the community needs—without doing a needs assessment to diagnose their needs. It then invites the community to participate in programs in which the community might have no interest. CHURCH OFFICERS AND THEIR DUTIES ADVENTIST COMMUNITY SERVICES/DORCAS SOCIETY • The Church with the City(Community) Sees mission to the community as a partnership. Discovers from the community the burning issues. Brings the ministry of the church out into the community. In other words, this is the church that ASKS the community: What needs do you see are not being met in the community? e.g. Is it poverty, drug, and alcohol abuse? What organizations are already doing something? What areas are not being covered—because there are not enough resources? It says, “We want to help—How can we help?” Then it makes a strategic plan and gets out there—with the community! In every church there is talent, which, with the right kind of labor, might be developed to become a great help in this work. That which is needed now for the upbuilding of our churches is the nice work of wise laborers to discern and develop talent in the church—talent that can be educated for the Master’s use. There should be a well-organized plan for the employment of workers to go into all our churches, large and small, to instruct the members how to labor for the upbuilding of the church and also for unbelievers. It is training, education, that is needed. Those who labor in visiting the churches should give the brethren and sisters instruction in practical methods of doing missionary work. {9T 117.2} CHURCH OFFICERS AND THEIR DUTIES Sabbath School Department • The sabbath school is the primary religious education system of the Seventh-Day Adventist church and has four purposes: Bible Study. Fellowship. Community outreach. World mission Emphasis CHURCH OFFICERS AND THEIR DUTIES Sabbath School Department “Sabbath School is one of the most important parts of Sabbath. It gives us the opportunity for fellowship, mission understanding, outreach and one of the greatest parts, Bible study and discussion. What a privilege to be able to study our Bible and the Adult Bible Study Guide in a small group setting and make the wonderful biblical instructions practical for our spiritual experience the next week. No one should miss Sabbath School!”—Ted N C Wilson, president, General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists. Has a line of labor been devised and placed before them in such a way that each has seen the necessity of taking part in the work? . . . It is by education and practice that persons are to be qualified to meet any emergency which may arise; and wise planning is needed to place each one in his proper sphere, that he may obtain an experience that will fit him to bear responsibility.” E.
