Critical Items *MUST attend all four days (guys, first day only) *Current Sports Physical needed for Tryouts *Registration must be completed online by April 23rd, 3:00 pm *All BHS Cheer fines must be paid *Learn the “Fight Song” found on the BHS Website/athletics/cheer/tab on left (girls only) *Must be passing ALL classes Program Purpose ● ● ● ● ● ● Cheerleaders shall promote and lead school spirit and pride at school, in the community, and at athletic events both at the league and state level. They shall lead the crowd involvement during athletic games and club activities. They shall demonstrate the “team concept” by following the guidelines as set by athletic governing bodies. Cheerleaders should promote good sportsmanship-like conduct and school spirit through cooperation with other students, teachers and administrators. Cheerleaders shall cooperate with the coach, game officials and other squad members. Cheerleaders will compete and perform skills learned throughout the year. General Conduct and Responsibility ➢ Uniform and Appearance: ● Entire uniform shall be worn to school on the day of a game or event. (at the discretion of the coach or captain) ● Uniform (including warm-ups or outerwear) shall be worn at (to) all games and events. You must wear uniform pieces that are part of the uniform. ● Each cheerleader is responsible for care and maintenance of all uniform pieces; anything lost must be replaced immediately. Missing uniform parts will result in no game participation. ● Uniform and additional uniform items are to be purchased and kept by the cheerleader. Uniforms are not to be loaned out or borrowed by any non-team members. ● Accessories must follow the National Federation Rules. Hair accessories must be school colors or match hair color. Questionable accessories must be pre-approved by the coach. Hair must be out of the face at all times and off the shoulders. ● No jewelry may be worn during practice or at games. This includes belly button rings, nose rings, necklaces, etc. ● Fingernails must be kept short. This is for the student’s safety and is a National Federation Rule. ➢ General: ● Cheerleaders shall not eat or chew gum while on the field, court or in the cheering area. NO gum at practice! ● Cell phones are not to be used (unless Ok’d by coach) at practice or games. ● It is required that all stunting be supervised by a coach. No stunting shall be done outside of designated game or practice time. ● Attendance is required at all events. A cheerleader’s major role is the promotion of school spirit. Being a cheerleader requires a major time commitment in the summer, fall and winter months involving cheering at events, participating in fundraisers, practices, assembly planning, and spirit promotion activities. ➢ Social Media: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Social Networking Sites: ● Do not post any pictures or comments on social networking sites or websites that could be construed as inappropriate ● If cyber bullying is happening online, school consequences may result in addition to team consequences. ● Please remember that your profiles are not only a representation of yourself, but also of your entire team and school. Please be responsible and display a high level of integrity and self-respect. ● Discipline: will follow the “Code of Conduct” set forth by the Bainbridge Island School District. As a Cheerleader you are expected to follow the “Code of Conduct” year around. Attendance is Mandatory! Cheer Tryouts ● ● ● ● The JV squad will be incoming Freshmen, Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors. The Varsity squad will be incoming Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors. Spirit squad will be incoming 7th, 8th, Freshman, Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors. Competition squad will be select athletes from JV and Varsity squad. First Day *Bring your application! Wear comfortable clothes and tennis shoes. If you will be new to the Bainbridge school district, please contact Tawnya Jackson for tryout options. All NEW girls will need to learn the “Fight Song” before the first day. The video is located on the BHS website/Athletics/Cheer (video is on the left). CHEER TRYOUT FITNESS EXPECTATIONS: JV/Varsity Squads are expected to pass the Fitness test. Spirit Squad does not need to pass the Fitness test. There are 8 fitness exercises to practice and master for tryouts. These exercises have been selected to represent the agility and strength you will need to be successful on the BHS 2018/2019 Cheer Team and help avoid injury from the required jumps, stunts, and dances being used in next year’s squad performances. You will need to pass ALL 8 to satisfy the fitness requirement for tryouts. Please start working on your stretching, flexibility, strength, and balance now to be prepared for tryouts. All will review the Fight Song, Kicks and Jumps. Second Day You will be taught a cheer and dance. We will review the Fight Song, Kicks and Jumps needed for the final day. Third Day I will be separating you into stunt positions. We will be going over basic stunts. Like many other sports, I am looking for athletes to fill specific positions. We will review the material and If you are a tumbler, I will ask you to demonstrate your skills for me. Fourth Day - Final Tryout You will perform for the Judges in a closed tryout space (Main Gym). Please wear black shorts/skorts, white top (no logo) and tennis shoes. Hair must be pulled back in a pony and no jewelry may be worn. You will perform Jumps, Kicks, Cheer, Dance and Fight Song. 2018/2019 Cheer Squads will be emailed on Saturday, April 28th, 1:00 pm *On the next couple of pages you will see what is expected of you during the Fitness part of the Tryout. Practice these at home. Fitness Test 1. Kicks (Left and Right) 2. Jumps: Toe Touch and one other jump. 3. Balance Leg Lift – Right Leg – 30 second duration - Correct position: Stand on flat left foot, Extend right leg straight out behind, flat back and bottom, arms straight out at shoulder width, head flat. SWITCH - Correct position: Stand on flat right foot, Extend left leg straight out behind, flat back and bottom, arms straight out at shoulder width, head flat. 4. Face down Plank – 45 Second duration – correct positioned: 90 degree elbow bend, flat back/bottom, toe/ball of foot. Left Arm Plank – 20 sec. duration – correct position: 90 degree left elbow, feet together, hip off ground. Right Arm Plank - 20 sec. duration – correct position: 90 degree right elbow, feet together, hip off ground. 5. Wall Sit – 1 minute duration – correct position: back flat against wall, knees at 90 degree bend, arms straight out, feet flat on ground. 6. Push up – 7 (Seven) fully extended push-ups – correct position: back and bottom flat, ball/toes of feet, shoulders squared. 7. Handheld Split (right) – hold for 3 seconds - correct position: hands supporting at both hips, legs extended, body straight. 8. 12 Minute Mile – Run/Jog 4 times around the track at BHS in 12 minutes or less. Our goal is a 10 minute Mile. Location: University of Puget Sound (3 nights/4 days, All Inclusive $384 Camp Clothes: Our goal is to fundraise for our 3 days of camp clothes $100 total. If money is not raised, it will be the responsibility of the cheerleader to pay. Transportation: Because we do not pay the sports fee of $250 per sport season, at times I will need parent drivers.
