IKM Assessment Description LINUX BASICS Linux Commands. The Secure Evaluation Mode and Remote versions of this test will contain a minimum of 24 questions and will require a typical time of 28 minutes. The Secure Interview Mode and QwikChek versions will provide as many questions as the test taker can answer within an approximate 18 minute time limit. Following is a description of each sub-topic on the test: GUI Applications tests proficiency in using the common UNIX/Linux Graphical User Interface (GUI) tools: X11, GNOME, X Terminal and VNC. File Access and Management tests ability to recognize files, directories, links and permissions applied to them in UNIX/Linux. Filters and Regular Expressions checks knowledge of working with standard UNIX/Linux filters such as grep, sed, awk, cut, uniq, wc and sort. Networking Utilities evaluates ability to use TCP/IP-based tools to send and receive files or process commands over a network via UNIX or Linux servers. Topics include wget, curl, ftp, scp, and ssh. Shell Environment assesses knowledge of standard UNIX/Linux shell variables (e.g. PATH, PS1) and initialization scripts ( ~/.bashrc, ~/.profile), together with built-in commands (such as set, export and alias) and related commands such as echo and which. This sub-topic covers the most commonly used shells: Bash and Bourne. UNIX/Linux Commands determines familiarity with fundamental core UNIX/Linux commands. This includes cd, pwd, man, locate, whereis and find. Filesystem Utilities tests understanding of the utilities commonly used to manage filesystems in UNIX/Linux, such as mount and umount, fdisk, mkfs, and eject. Programming Environment assesses knowledge of computer programming, using C or C++, on a UNIX/Linux platform. This includes: using environment variables programmatically; creating processes using fork() and exec(); working with multi-threaded applications; and network programming.
