The

the
underlying
performance
among
intermediate students of La Naval Academy. To find out such
relationship,
the
researchers
first
obtained
the
chosen
students’ self-esteem level. Then, the researchers gathered the
average
grades
for
the
first
quarter
from
their
respective
advisers. After that, a classroom observation was done in order
to find out the chosen students’ performance in their classes.
5.1.1 Self-esteem
The researchers used Rosenberg Self-Esteem scale to measure the
chosen students’ self-esteem levels. Based on the data gathered,
most of the grade 4 students have normal self-esteem (55%). Only
25% of the grade 4 students have high self-esteem, and only 20%
of the grade 4 students have low self-esteem. In grade 5, 75% of
the students have normal self-esteem. Only 10% of the grade 5
students have high self-esteem, and only 15% of the grade 5
students have low self-esteem. In grade 6, 35% of the students
have normal self-esteem. 15% of the grade 6 students have high
self-esteem
and
55%
of
the
grade

students
have

the
data
gathered, 30% of the grade 4 students have grades that are 90
and above. 45% of the grade 4 students have grades that range
from 85-89. 20% of the grade 4 students have grades that range
from 80-84. 5% of the grade 4 students have grades that range
from 75-79. In grade 5, 25% of the students have grades that are
90 and above. 40% of the grade 5 students have grades that range
from 85-89. 35% of the grade 5 students have grades that range
from 80-84. In grade 6, 10% of the students have grades that are
90 and above. 55% of the grade 6 students have grades that range
from 85-89. 20% of the grade 6 students have grades that range
from 80-84. 15% of the grade 6 students have grades that range
from 75-79.
5.1.3 Classroom Observation
As a summary of our data, we analyzed the information that were
gathered. The researchers looked for the possible relationship
of
self-esteem
and
academic
performance.
In
grade
4,
most
students with normal – high self-esteem got a higher average
grade than the students with low self-esteem. In grade 5, most
students with normal – high self-esteem tend to reach grades
that are higher than the students with low self-esteem. Same
findings were found on the students in the 6th level, as the
students
with
normal
–
high
self-esteem
got
higher
average
grades too. In this case, there is a relationship of self-esteem
and academic performance among the intermediate students of La
Naval Academy.
5.2 Conclusion
The study aimed to investigate whether there was a relationship
between
self-esteem
and
academic
performance
of
intermediate
students of La Naval Academy. Specifically, it sought to answer
these questions:

students with low self-esteem (86.71).
4.
Is
self-esteem
a
predictor
of
academic
success
for
the
intermediate students of La Naval Academy?
- Yes. After analyzing the gathered data, the researchers
found out that students from grade 4 – 6 who have normal – high
self-esteem tend to get higher grades than the students with low
self-esteem. In this case, having higher self-esteem equals to
better academic performance.
5.3 Recommendations
For teachers:
- Teachers should take deep care for pupils with low selfesteem. According to Kyriacou (2001), Some pupils may be
terrified to engage in scholastic tasks in order to avoid
failure. Such pupils can become quite isolated from the
teaching learning dynamics, which can affect them if they
do not get sufficient care from their teachers.
- Teachers should have a good working relationship with their
pupils.

positive about themselves and engage better in classroom
work.
- Consequently, the study suggests that teachers should have
extensive efforts to enhance pupils’ self-esteem. The study
found out that self-esteem has a direct relation with the
academic performance of intermediate students. According to
Kalouti-Mekky
(2012),
developing
a
students’
self-esteem
can affect their engagement in tasks and their aspirations
which are aspects that can help them throughout their life.
For school:
- The school should promote activities that may help with the
students’ social skills. Students with low self-esteem can
fear
social
situations.

For parents:
- Praise your child, but do it wisely. Praises are a way to
show that you are proud. However, overpraising can tend to
feel like it is not genuine. Praise not only on results,
but also for their effort, progress and attitude.
- Be a good role model. Parents should set up a good example.
Modeling the right attitude also counts.
- Focus on their strengths. Pay attention to what your child
does well and enjoys. This improves their behavior, as you
make sure you let your child have a chance to develop these
strengths.
For future researchers:
There are limitations to this study and the researchers would
like to suggest ways that this study may be improved.

- Further studies including the gender in relation to selfesteem and academic performance are recommended.
- The sample size in this study may not have been as large as
necessary.
Future
researchers
should
include
more
participants as the data that will be gathered by doing so
can be more accurate.
- A crucial factor that affects this study is time. Future
researchers should invest more time as this study needs to
be done thoroughly.
- Future
researchers
should
obtain
the
students’
whole
semester grade, as one quarter may not be accurate enough.
- This study is only opted for the intermediate students.
Future researchers should study the relationship of selfesteem and academic performance among the primary, junior
and senior high school students.
