Cooperative – means willing to be helpful by doing what someone wants or asks for Why being cooperative is important? Cooperation is important because it allows people and groups to work together to achieve a common goal or derive mutual benefits. Cooperation exists at many levels and takes place between individuals and organizations as well as between states and countries. Cooperation allows participants to exchange valuable information that helps both sides improve their knowledge bases and work in a time- and resource-efficient manner. Cooperation between people is necessary so that they can meet each other's needs. Cooperation between people is what helps them very much to do this. Everyone needs a doctor but they are not doctors. Everyone needs a lawyer and they are not lawyers and so people always need each other, this will help them to develop very much their relationships, which can only be done by collaborating with each other. 5 Advantages of being cooperative 1. Reduces Unproductive Competition Team cooperation encourages one another to work together for the benefit of all. It reduces the desire of people to compete against each other, which often is never good for the business or the things they are doing, and instead focus on working together to achieve a common goal. 2. Enhances Knowledge Sharing In a team, every member is encouraged to participate and contribute to the task at hand which results in compounded outputs. When everyone works cooperatively, their efforts multiply, become stronger and better. In the process, the members working together exchange ideas as each of them gain new perspective and knowledge on the tasks they are working on. 3. Fosters Good Communication Still, on the advantages of team cooperation, it also enhances effective communication within members and the organization at large. Members who work well together and consider themselves as part of the team incline towards better communication. As they cooperate, they begin to learn how to communicate with each other, skills of effective communication and even learn to recognize subtle variations in the same. 4. Easy Achievement of the Organizational Goal It’s high time that everyone starts to realize that it is their responsibility to enhance and build relationships between the members. It can be agreed that creating the right level of teamwork is not always easy. However, having said that we need to keep in mind that it is not impossible. Creativity, determination and the will to take the initiative are the qualities required for a team to succeed. 5. Establishes Trust In as much as everyone argues, disagrees and even fights, at the end of the day they learn to accommodate each other’s characters, strengths, and weakness to be able to work together. When everyone trusts each other in a team, they establishes a strong foundation of relationships that endure minor conflicts especially those that arise due to individual differences. Responsible – Being responsible means being dependable, keeping promises and honoring our commitments. It is accepting the consequences for what we say and do. It also means developing our potential. Why is responsibility important? Responsibility is important because it provides a sense of purpose, in addition to building resilience amidst adversity on an individual and societal level. Like an addiction, sidestepping responsibility may feel good in the short-term, but leads to exponentially worse pain and suffering in the long term. The Benefits of Being Responsible 1. You become more confident - Confidence comes after action, not before it. When you are responsible for your life, you keep building your confidence as you continuously improve on your outcomes. You see confidence and success as the continuously evolving processes that they are. 2. You solve more problems - There will be many problems that you will never be able to solve unless you are willing to take an honest look at how you might be contributing to your problems. You must realize that when you change yourself, the world around you changes too. That is a great power to possess. It is what being responsible it is all about. 3. You experience better relationships - It is hard to build bonds with people who never seem to make a mistake because we can’t relate to them. We know that we are fallible – that we make mistakes. We bond with people who are more like us. In fact, owning up to your mistakes is often a great way to strengthen your bonds with others. 4. You become a role model - You don’t have to have a position of authority to be a leader. A leader goes first so, remember that you set the example you wish to see before you tell others to behave. When you do so consistently, you will have to tell less people and any correction you offer, will be from honest, authentic person. 5. Improved decision making - Decisions are only fearful when you see failure as a temporary thing. Being responsible allows you to realize that you can learn from every outcome; good or bad. You can improve on every outcome so; the only way you can fail is if you fail to decide and consequently, fail to take action. Benefits of being responsible What I Can Do and Assessment Directions: Read the story below entitled “Problems on the Ark”, then answer the following questions. Write your answer on the space provided. Problems on the Ark On Noah's Ark things were getting a bit boring. Noah and his animals had spent so many days secluded there that they started organising games and activities to amuse themselves. But, with all that pent up energy, the games got rather rowdy, and a woodpecker ended up drilling a hole in the bottom of the ark. As water began entering the boat, the hole got bigger. So, more water came in, and things got a bit worrying. One by one, different animals tried to fix the hole. They even got competitive about it because everyone wanted to be the animal that had saved the ark. The beaver built a dam over the hole, but not even that worked. Everyone was scared, worried that the boat would sink. That was, until the bee started talking. The bee explained to everyone how it was that bees always worked together, as a team, each one doing the job they were best at. On hearing this, all the animals set about working together, each one playing their part by contributing their own special talent. The birds grabbed onto parts of the ark with their beaks, and flapped their wings furiously, lifting the boat up a little. The elephants sucked up the water in their trunks and shot it back into the sea. The fastest animals ran here and there, collecting materials. Those used to making nests took this material and stuffed it quickly into the hole. And so, working together, the animals managed to reduce the amount of water coming into the ark, but they still hadn't stopped it completely. Desperate, they kept asking each other if there were any other animals that could help. They searched and searched, but there were no other animals left in the ark. Then, suddenly, a little fish swam in through the hole. The animals realised that they still had not asked for help from all the sea creatures. They asked the little fish to go and summon help to save their boat. He swam off and soon fish after fish arrived at the ark. Even a big whale came, and the whale pressed its great belly against the hole in the ship. This stopped any more water entering, and it gave the animals on the ark time to close up the hole.
