1. How did the speaker exhibit each of the following? a) Taking and avoiding sides The speaker, senator Grace Poe, is addressing the public as a woman and a mother that wants what is best for her children and for the county. She also said that she is a Filipino that loves her country and a new politician that will correct the problems of the old. b) Explicit appeals to common in-group membership In her statement “Jessa, ikaw ang dahilan kung bakit ako naririto dahil ako ay may anak na katulad mo rin. Matitiis mo ba na ang mga teachers natin umaalis na lang para maging katulong sa ibang bansa?” she is appealing to all mothers, teachers, farmers and those in poverty that those are the problems in our country that an elected president should focus. She is also saying that women can do what men can do in terms of leading. c) Constructing aspirational identities In another statement she said that “Sabay-sabay po tayo sa kinabukasan na maipagmamalaki natin, sa isang bansang maipagmamalaki natin, sa isang bansa kung saan hindi lamang iilan ang mayaman, kung saan hindi lamang iilan ang maligaya, kung saan lahat tayo ay sama-sama. Puti ka man, pula, dilaw o kung anumang kulay. Pagkatapos ng halalan, tayo ay iisa. Pilipinong nagmamahal sa bansa.” She is telling her audience of what the Philippines will be if ever she is elected as a president. d) Implicit displays of rhetorical alignment The way the speaker is speaking by using inclusive pronouns to say that she is with the people and she is one of the people, it is also shown with how she dresses not to extravagantly, and also shows that she is a Filipino woman by maintaining her posture and elegance all throughout the video. 2. Which of these strategies do you think was well employed? Why do you think so? I think that the most employed strategy was the second one, Explicit appeals to common in-group membership, because she is really establishing her self as a woman or mother that will do whatever is in her powers to do what needs to be done and that she is a Filipino which is compassionate to those that are suffering from corruption and improper spending of public funds. 3. Overall, would you say that the speech was enough to persuade you? Why or why not? My thoughts regarding my overall impression of her speech as to whether it was enough to persuade me is that, the answer is in the negative. It must be noted that a president should speak and act with sense of persuasion and decisiveness. Her demeanor and line of speech is wanting of a politician running for the presidency. It must be stressed that a presidentiable with greater chances of winning should be persuasive, compassionate, tough on her views, and be able to convey his or her message with conviction. Sad to note that throughout the entire speech she did not show or convey how the country’s economy bloom, how to end the corruption, and how she will lead the country to prosperity. The way she delivered her speech for me was how a normal politician delivered it and not a politician that can change the livelihood and education of the population, the country’s economy and the massive corruption that is going on all throughout the Philippines. Her speech only focused on one aspect which was to defend her for an issue that was hurled to her, that of being a woman and a newbie in the world of politics. Her demeanor could be overlooked being that she is soft spoken but it could have been remedied by focusing on the content of her speech. Yes, there was a humanized side of it to persuade the audience but it was still lacking on so many aspects.
