Project Overview
The project is to be completed at approximately 4-week intervals throughout the semester. The
project will conclude with presenting plant layout (include Emergency Response Team- ERT and
Emergency Response Plan- ERP). You will work together in group, each team on a slightly different
problem. The full design project will contribute 10% to your final grade, however….
1.0 Project Description
1.1 The project titles are (1st come 1st serve):
1) Production of Toulene
2) Production of Benzene
3) Production of Ammonia
4) Production of Propylene
5) Production of Methanol
6) Production of Citric Acid
7) Production of Sulfuric Acid
8) Production of Sodium Hydroxide
9) Production of Acetone
10) Production of Styrene
11) Production of Ethylene
12) Production of Ethanol
13) Production of Cumene
14) Production of IPA
15) Production of Acetic acid
1.2 The project task will be:
a) Enroll yourself in the group of your selection (G1, G2, G3, ...... G25) in KALAM. Each group
will have 4 members. You can have a discussion with your best mate before deciding the
group number.
b) Once together create a UNIQUE and memorable group name. The name will be your identity
in this project.
c) ONE (1) group member need to choose the tittle in KALAM (1st come 1st serve).
d) Find an article or reference which has a detailed process flow diagram (PFD) of the
chosen tittle (Due date: 22 April 2022).
e) Choose TWO major units (one from reaction unit and one from separation unit) for
HAZOP and Fault Tree Analysis (FTA). The example of the PFD is shown in Figure 1.1,
where red box represent the reaction units and blue box represent the separation units. If
you can’t find exactly the same, no worry, as long as it is a PFD (Due date: follow
KALAM).:

f) Design your Emergency Response Team (ERT) and job scope for each member.
g) Design a detail plant layout contains ERP elements and ERP descriptions of your plant.
h) Report format: Font (Calibri) with 11 pt and single spacing. Margin 2 cm (top,bottom,
right), 2.5 cm (left).
i) Table title must be on the top of the table while figure title at the bottom of the figure.
j) Proper CITATIONs and REFERENCEs.
k) Maximum page for report is 15 pages.
2.0 Resources for Your Project
2.1 Journal Articles
Many of the journal articles that you will need for this project can be obtained online from the
Library. You need to locate reference for your product immediately so that you can meet the first
deadline. Online journal can be found:

From the library website: http://iportal.ump.edu.my/ under E-Resources (at the bottom).
The username is your student number while the password is your IC number.
Or directly for the most journals (If you use the internet access of UMP):
o Science Direct (Elsevier Journals) http://www.sciencedirect.com/ such as
Separation and Purification Technology, Chemical Engineering Science and
Chemical Engineering Journal
o ACS publications http://pubs.acs.org/ of interest such as under section Unit
Operations and Processes.
2.2 Reference Books and other related links
 The relevant reference books or handbooks can be obtained from the library.

3.0 Assessment
 The project will be evaluated based on the following distribution:
o Report- 62%
o Video Presentation (all team members must involve; compulsory with
presenter video; max 20 minutes)- 38%
 You can refer to the rubric in KALAM for mark distribution

4.0 Report and video submission






Follow the instruction in KALAM
There will be progress repot submission
Due date for full report: 13 JUNE 2022 (before 5:00 PM)
Late submission is not accepted. Fail to follow the instruction will be penalized by 10 marks
deduction from the group.
Submit the full report in PDF and video presentation in MP4 via KALAM
Name the file as submission type Groupname tittle.pdf and Groupname_Tittle.mpeg
o Example: Report ChemEpals Toulene.pdf
o Example: Video ChemEpals Toulene.mpeg
