Societal Structures
Application
For each type of society, explain the structure of that type of
society. Include: Roles, status of groups, values/beliefs, unique characteristics.
Then give examples (historical or otherwise) that characterize the society. Then
find at least 3 pictures that illustrate what this structure of society is about.

Hunter-Gatherer Society
Structure:
- Little domestication of animals
- Acquiring food
Values/Beliefs derived from Structure:
- Nomads are common, small but each important
Examples:
- Caveman
- Bushman
Pastoral/Horticultural Society
Structure:
- Specialized work
- Grow crops with simple tools
- Raise livestock
Values/Beliefs derived from Structure:
- Work is for men
- Animals
Examples:
- Sami people
- The Maasai people
Agricultural Society
Structure:
- Use of technology to grow crops
- Food surplus
- Women lower in status
Values/Beliefs derived from Structure:
- Women are less than men
- Work smarter (technology) vs harder
Examples:
- In Mesopotamia
- In China

Industrial Society
Structure:
- Using machines to produce goods
- So overpopulated in factories
- Standard of living is raised
Values/Beliefs derived from Structure:
- Money is more important than the workers well being
- Materialism or consumerism
- Social status, owning factory vs working
Examples:
- Farms that harvest vegetables using machinery
Post-Industrial Society
Structure:
- Based on info, knowledge, and the selling of services
- Definition of men have changed
Values/Beliefs derived from Structure:
- Quantity over quality
Examples:
- Goods were mass-produced utilizing machinery
1. What causes the progression from one society to another?
Due to population growth, views separate different environments. Had to develop
different tools and different ways of life to survive. Losing direct contact with one
another, language was also different
2. What problems did factories create for people who were used to life in an
Agricultural Society?
Factories were poorly lit, cluttered, unsafe. Machines were dirty which resulted in
accidents that resulted in worker injuries and deaths. The rise of labor unions
made factory work less dangerous
3. What values/beliefs that were established in the Hunter-Gather stage are found
in today’s Post-Industrial Society?
Mobility, personal property is kept low
