1 Reading Fluency Assessments Heather T Norris Fort Hays State University SPED832 VA Teaching Reading in Special Education Dr. Curtis October 13, 2021 2 Part 1: Running Record Dustin (D. this students’ real name does not contain a letter d,) is a graduating senior and is reading at the 8th grade level. On the word list provided, D scored 87%. The words missed all were multi-syllabic, vcv words that contained the letter “u”. The next step had D read an 8th grade passage and scored 96 words correct out of 100, in a one-minute time frame, which is a fluency rate of 96 Words Per Minute (WPM), and an accuracy of 96%. I did the word list first before he read the paragraph, which was probably the incorrect order to do things, but he was not thrilled about having to read, so we did the list first. So, having him to the word list first increased his fluency. Part 2: Repeated reading: D. read a passage about acid rain. The first run through, it took D. 2 min. 45 seconds, with 15 errors. After listening to me read the passage, he was very enjoyable to listen to, offering excitement and pauses that made the article engaging. Additionally, his reading time shortened to 2 min. 14 sec. with one error. 3 4 5 Excerpt from student level AGS Physical Science textbook, copywrite 2002.
