“It” film review
I would like to write a review about an “old” and a “new” film. The “old” film means movie based on the
novel by Stephen King “It” which was directed in 1990. The “new” film is remake which consist of two
parts, first of which was directed in 2017. It is obviously that I’ve watched only the first part. It is impossible
to compare a half of the film and the full one’s version and that’s why I will compare a few parallel things.
First of all director of the old film could fit in full novel’s plot in three-hour film. The first part of the new
film lasts two and a half hours. So, in any case, both old and new films couldn’t get in of all the moments. In
the old film two temporary lines develops parallel to each other. We can see characters in their childhood,
then in mature and then they appear as kids again. The first part of the new film devoted to their childhood
and only in the second part we will see their grown-up. It is strange to compare two equal characters in
different age.
Casting is wonderful in both films, but the old version is better, as for me, because “old” characters are
closer to novel’s ones, closer to those time. And in the new film they are quite “modernize”. For example,
Beverly Marche was bluffed by her violent father. And in the new film she is some kind of “tearaway”. But
it is noticeable that threadbare psychological truth which can be found in every King’s books (for example,
the rule that violent father’s daughters always choose the same husbands) became more obvious and visible.
So, films based on King’s books constantly visualize these facts.
It is a typicall American film, because there is endless struggle of light against darkness. The light are
people, seven main characters. And darkness is entity appeared in the different likenesses, but most of all it
is a clown. Librarian Mike is some kind of common denominator between them.
As I have already mentioned, both old and new film couldn’t hold full plot of the novel. But it makes two
films more different than equal. In the new film directors collected all “hardcore stuff” and in the old one
people’s relationships were stressed.
So, whereas differences, the new film impressed me too, and I can recommend it.
