Nowadays, stabilizing the status and maintaining the quality of education proved to be a challenging test to our government because the safety of the youth needs to be guaranteed. To control the rapid spread of COVID-19, quarantine protocols were strictly implemented and educational institutions had to be temporarily closed. As a result, more than a billion learners have been affected worldwide. Among this number are over 28 million Filipino learners across academic levels who have to stay at home and comply with the Philippine government’s quarantine measures (UNESCO, 2020) Although this is a new experience for the current generation of learners, it has not been an obstacle for them to stop studying. The shift to online learning scheme was a transition that greatly affected both students and teachers. In one of his interviews, President Rodrigo Duterte rejected the recommendations of the Department of Education (DepEd) to reopen schools.“I cannot gamble on the health of the children,” a statement that received adverse reactions especially from the parents and students struggling with poverty. Despite the fanning concerns and unceasing controversies, it seems online learning is truly here to stay. (Gutierrez and Bilefsky, 2021) The pandemic has made it even more difficult for the already financially struggling households to keep up with the demands of online learning. From the expensive digital tools and devices to the unstable internet connection, students and their families have tried to make use of resources available to make sure that they can comply and avoid being left behind. Although online learning may be the best option at hand, it is not without flaws. The rudiments of the new methods of learning has kept everyone wondering if the learners are really adjusting and coping with the modifications; if the fun and joy of learning can still be felt through the virtual screen; and if they are truly able to comprehend the lessons and skills that need to be learned. The distressing concerns are not limited to the mentioned speculations, for the students also face problems that arise especially during synchronous sessions or the classes conducted in real time. Some of the most common issues experienced are more on the technical side. It is a known fact that the Philippines is a country that struggles with maintaining a stable and strong internet connection. Back then, even if you don’t have internet access, that won’t excuse you from attending classes. Now, it has become a “just normal” thing to even disappear in the middle of class because the student got disconnected. Additional technical problems have something to do with the tools being used. First, the outdated devices and software that needs to be replaced or updated in order to work efficiently during synchronous classes. Second, the audio clarity is influenced by both the strength of internet connection and the quality of the product itself. It has almost become a habit for both students and teachers to ask “can you hear me clearly?” before proceeding. Last, the system glitching of the applications that would result in sudden removal during synchronous sessions. At some point, the screen would freeze and that would require the student to restart their devices. What makes it frustrating is when their activities or homeworks weren’t automatically saved as the system glitched. Last, the incompatibility of some applications to their device. This might be especially burdensome for the students who do not possess advanced or updated digital devices. (Amadora, 2020) Indeed, the education system has faced an unprecedented health crisis that has shaken up its foundation. Given today's uncertainties, it is vital to gain a clear understanding of students' online learning experience in times of the COVID-19 pandemic. In a research conducted by Barrot, Llenares, & Del Rosario (2021) the results indicated that COVID-19 pandemic had the greatest impact on the quality of the learning experience and students' mental health. With the quality of learning being threatened, it was mentioned that the students greatest challenge was linked to their learning environment at home. According to Vawter (2009), The attention span of the average middle school student aged 10 to 14 is 10 to 12 minutes. Therefore, direct instruction should be kept to no more than this span of time. It is no secret that in order to ensure an excellent academic performance, students need focus and undivided attention towards their studies. However, the changes in education brought by the pandemic has made it even harder for the young learners to remain engaged especially if their learning environment is one of the key factors that causes their loss of attention. With the above-mentioned information, this research is deemed significant to determine the specific external distractions that affect the online class participation of Junior High School students. We are now in the second year of online learning. While we are slowly adapting, the difficulty remains the same. There are still students who are struggling to find alternatives to maintain an active online class participation because they are not well informed about the roots of the cause, which is the external distractions. Therefore, by showing the problems that need to be solved, it would be easier to come up with countermeasures, if not solutions, to improve the online class participation of the students. This research will surely be of help to the students of VHSM in attaining the best learning during this online class by avoiding or even dealing with the distractions beforehand. This Questions is telling how does the technology distract Junior High School students affect their online class participation 11. How does the technology related distractions you selected affect your online class participation? Answer in 2-3 sentences. i'm kinda bored and i feel depressed without those things i chose last question. hope that helps During break, I will watch a video and go over break time and be late for class. My friends would text me when I'm in class and we would a pretty fun conversation and I wouldn't pay attention to what the teacher is saying. Sometime my friends would send me videos and I would watch them and not no what's going on in class. I'd say it doesn't affect much actually. I've never been able to sit still and pay attention to one thing at a time unless I'm hyperfocused, which only happens when I'm doing something I consider fun or engaging. If I'm told to do something, EVEN if it's not school related, I would get distracted 9 times out of 10. Sometimes when theres something my classmates want to say, I check on messenger or discord. When I do assignments I tend to use music to cure my boredom. And lastly is video games, I dont use video games during class and it doesn’t distract me. Technology can help students by making learning more engaging and collaborative. Rather than memorizing facts, students learn by doing and through critical thinking. these things dont distract me but help me focus However, without the structure of a traditional classroom, online learning can also be challenging and incite distractions. Top distractions for students include social media, texting, television, and family very bad By getting distracted and not knowing whats happening in class It affects my online class participation because whenever I see a notification on screen I check it I couldn't pay attention to the teacher anymore since my mind is focused in the distractions that I have stated. For some people, they get distracted from wanting to play games and some people want to chat with their friends. Using other devices while on class can easily distract us from our tasks includng, participation, recitation, or our focus for listening to the lessons. Making my Distracted because of the music and the videos I watch. Notifications is the only main thing that distracts me because of the Notif sound and the amount of notifs in a minute, I mean yeah I can just turn it off/silent but what if its important and after all all i need is just to look at it and read it. For Video games keep me distracted because I tend to focus more on the games than the actual class, my digital devices also keep me distracted since my ate, parents and classmates or friends often message me. Sometimes when I use my digital device, it disturbs me and I can't focus in the class. Same with Social media. And also by watching videos, it makes me feel relaxed that I forgot to do the other tasks so yeah. I lose focus and and get distracted. Sometimes, my mind is focused on other things that are not school related It affects my attention in class which nakes me wanna do something else instead of listening. I mostly read something and get distracted and lose track of time same with listening to music, other than that I get distracted either during break and kinda forget i have class. I only use it if my parents call or message me In the Graph represented below is telling the top 3 person who distract Junior High School students in their online class participation. The Question represented below is telling the people related distractions affect Junior High School student in their online class participation. 13. How does the people related distractions affect your online class participation? Answer in 2-3 sentences. 21 responses they show me something/s and they always call me to do some chores I am alone in my room. I have no people distractions Sometime my family members would ask me questions and get me distracted from class. And sometime they tell me to something for them in the middle of class. I talk to classmates during class to ask questions or (confidential please :)) make jokes about the teacher. It keeps me interested in the class actually, because I'd be looking for things to laugh at, which makes me unconciously listen. Whenever theres someone in need from my family they come to my study place and disturb me. For Classmates and friends usually they bug me around and send messages but with the use of technology you can always mute them. distractions for students include social media, texting, television, and family, which can pull one's attention away from the task at hand and diminish productivity. My neighbors are very disrespectful and shameless and they blast music without thinking about others around them there no one that distract me but somethimes my classmates text me and i feel bad because i cant answer very much they dont rlly affect me that much They text me in class and I will always answer them They're noisy some of my family members keeps walking in and out of my room, sometimes the nake loud noises. It affects our learning becaus it can distract us from the things we're learning. They come in my room and talk to me for sometime. Family members - Because of the background noises. Pets - Because they are annoying sometimes and it can affect my online class Sometimes my parents come in at unexpected times or my sister does something in the same room. When neighbors are noisy during online classes, I easily get distracted and so do as the unexpected visitors. And my classmates too sometimes whenever I do other tasks, it bothers me a bit. None Sometimes my siblings talk very loudlu especially on Sundays since we have different weekends. My neighbours are often loud because of their kids but its okay. my classmates usually distract me because of them talking in messenger for my family members they usually dont realized im in class and ask me to do something They disturb me with the noise they make, or when they try to talk to me. In the Graph represented below is telling the top 3 environment related distractions that affect Junior High School Students in their Online class participation. In the Graph represented below is telling how does the environment distracts Junior High School Students online class participation. In the Pie chart represented below is telling how effective has online class/learning been for Junior High School students. In the Pie chart represented below is telling that does the Junior High School students enjoy their Online class. The Question below is telling what should be done to avoid the Junior High School Students being distracted during online classes. 18. What do you think should be done to avoid being distracted during online classes? Answer in 2-3 sentences. just listen well and be focused. it may sound hard but it's easy to do that Stay in a quiet room where you cannot hear neighbours and other noises. Tell family you are in class, and don’t have random items lm your desk. Put do not disturb on your devices while in class . Be in a place where there is minimal noise. I don't think anything should change. I'm quite happy with my position right now and everything I do is MY fault. Environmental distractions aren't a big problem. (Hope you have a nice day and stay safe! Hang in there :)) In my opinion, in avoiding being distracted during online classes is to inform your family members, mute devices and as much as you can avoid opening games or tabs that is not related to your class, it could be maybe like browsing through the internet and etc. That should include any social media, video chat, instant messaging, or gaming apps. i have no idea close your phone and go somewhere were there is no sounds just avoid it idk do not disturb, Close ur socials and stop playing stuff I think, unable to open other apps that can't be used during school hours is one way for me to focus in class. To stay focused and concentrated. To not be listening to anything while in class and do not play any games close your door so your family members don't come in. Background noises, But we cant change that because its a third party and we cant just tell them to quiet down since its anonymous and unexpected. I often try to put my other gadgets far away from me and do my classes in my room where I have the most privacy. My tips to avoid distractions during online classes is to avoid playing games, focus, and stay on track. Those are my tips to help you in online class. First of all, we should limit our gadget time so that we could focus on our Academic Standing and performance. Let's try to get the right motivation and advice to our family members, friends, relatives, etc... Self discipline since most of the i doze of. try and find a place where you can study quietly or train yourself to study while ignoring distractions, or you can inform the poeple in your house that you have class so that wouldnt interrupt you I think we should learn to have some self discipline.
