A CASE OVERVIEW OF KFC IN MECCA This case focuses on the particularities of the Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) restaurant run by the Americana Group in Mecca, in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. It allows students in the service industry, and especially those interested in the quick service industry to understand some of the challenges of operating in a market with high volume and other specific local market conditions. Perhaps, it will also allow those organizations wishing to enter into emerging markets to realize that globalization does not mean standardization of all practices but rather values. THE ROLE OF FUNCTIONALITY IN COMPETITIVENESS: AL-HARAM KFC One particular case of a QSR that has taken several measures to efficiently serve large numbers of customers is the Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) branch near the Holy Masjid Al-Haram in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. The Al-Haram KFC opened in 1994 and is operated by the Americana Group, also known as the Kuwait Food Company. Mecca, being a holy city for Muslims, receives large numbers of pilgrims throughout the year, especially during Hajj. As a result, the Al-Haram KFC, due to its convenient location, is a popular destination for visitors. More specifically, it receives nearly 1.5 times the average daily orders received by KFC branches worldwide during Hajj. The role of functionality is to cope with such high volume of customers; the Al-Haram KFC and its systems of preparation and serving are designed in a way that enables delivery of the best possible service to customers. In addition to these arrangements, it is also worth noting that during Hajj, the Al-Haram KFC employs a greater number of staff who are specifically trained to serve customers appropriately. Furthermore, to further increase the restaurant’s efficiency, the menu is reduced during Hajj to serve only products which require less labor, and separate order and delivery lines are created. Finally, as Saudi Arabia mandates that males and females are separated in queues, separate lines for men and women in the restaurant allow the product to be delivered in an orderly fashion. All these features of the Al-Haram KFC combined allow for greater organization within the restaurant and consequently allow for both quick and high-quality delivery of products to customers. The Americana Group’s strategy in designing and operating the AlHaram KFC shows that some innovation is required to ensure that QSRs adapt optimally to the volume of customers they receive. In the case of the Al-Haram KFC, the Americana Group has made both the restaurant and the system of delivery extremely functional and efficient. In doing so, the Al-Haram KFC has managed to attract and retain customers and has in turn remained a competitive QSR in Mecca. REVIEWS KFC in mecca (Traveler rating) • Excellent -56 • Very good-62 • Average-63 • Poor-36 • Terrible-38 Avoid KFC in Mecca: (A review by a customer) I have used KFC in quite a number of places but this KFC opposite to Harm shareef is the most pathetic place I ever see. Although the whole staff is pretty busy are bit the official at Cash counter(a middle aged person) is the most arrogant one. His tone and behavior is so derogatory as if u r not paying for food rather he is distributing alms and charity stuff. This clown needs to be taught the basic manners of dealing customers.
