There are eight planets in the solar system. The four inner planets
are Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars. The four outer planets are
Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune.
1. Mercury is the smallest planet in the solar system and the
closest to the sun.
2. Venus is very hot and it is the brightest planet. Its
atmosphere is made up of mostly carbon dioxide.
3. Earth is the third planet from the sun. Its atmosphere is
made of mostly nitrogen, oxygen and carbon dioxide.
4. Mars is known as the ‘Red Planet’ because of its red rocky
surface. It is the fourth planet from the sun.
5. Jupiter is a very cold planet and is made up of hydrogen
and helium gases. It is the largest planet in the solar system.
6. Saturn which is the second largest planet has many rings
around it which are made up of ice and rocks.
7. Uranus has 21 satellites and it is the third largest planet.
The axis of Uranus is tilted so it rotates its side.
8. Neptune is the windiest planet in the solar system. It has 30
satellites and is similar in size to Uranus. Neptune is cold
and gaseous.
