Activity on Poetry: (Writing an original HAIKU) A. Haiku combines form, content, and language in a meaningful, yet compact form. It usually uses symbolism, metaphor and imagery. B. The first line of the poem, called hokku or starting verse, frequently sets the tone for the rest of the poem. C. IT contains a kigo, an image of nature that evokes a particular season, beauty and effect to humanity. D. Line 1 – Only 5 syllables Think of something related to nature that would serve as your topic or subject matter E. Line 2 – Only 7 syllables This line usually talks about the topic you have chosen, which is directly related to line 1. F. Line 3 – Only 5 syllables This line is also connected to your topic but serves as the concluding line. Example: 1. The scorching hot sun Burns the working farmer’s back Night rest is needed 2. On a withered branch A big black crow has settled Then summer night fall Example Subject Matter: Rain Sky Mountain Flower Birds Rivers Animal(s) Insect(s) Sun Moon Pond Forest Star Dewdrops Sea breeze Etc. Directions: 1. Compose your own original haiku (not copied from books, internet or other sources) 2. Write your haiku at the center of a long bond paper (landscape). 3. Then, make an artistic representation (sketch/drawing using any coloring materials) of the topic you have chosen or the haiku you have written in the entire bond paper. See to it that your haiku is still legible and readable. Make a borderline, if possible. 4. Write your name (family name first, all caps) at the upper right-hand corner of the bond paper 5. In a separate long bond paper, explain your haiku including the artistic representation and the meaning/message you want to convey. (Portrait, Double space, Times New Roman). 6. Cleanliness, aesthetic value, and a very good explanation will also form part of the grade.
