News articles: Sports related injuries that made either the paper or the TV
news. Typed summary of the events. Include HOPS and possible prevention of
the injury. (10 points)
Journal abstracts: Write an abstract on a journal article. Include the purpose,
methods, results and relevance of the study. Article should be found from
either the NATA journal, The Journal of Sports Medicine, or Physician and
Sports Medicine. (15 points)
Team coverage: work with a sports team as a student trainer/manager for two
weeks. Write a report that includes the type of experience you had, your
duties, expectations, positive/negative experiences, and also include any
suggestions for our program (40 points)
Video interview: Interview a professional in the field of sports medicine.
Video tape for class to view. (20 points)
Design a emergency plan for your school. Include a specific plan for each
venue (directions, nearest phone, etc.) (30 points)
Attend a surgery: Schedule to views a surgery with our team physician. Write
a summary of the your experience, including the type of surgery, your
experience, and what you learned. (20 points)
Assist with team physicals: Help with organizing physicals or help by
measuring height & weight of athletes. (15 points)
Assist in morning, afternoon, or Saturday treatments. (10 points)
Do clinical rotations with team physician or physical therapist. Write a
summary of your experience and what you learned. (20 points)
HOPS report for the following: (8 points added to final grade: before exam)
1. Head, neck and spine injuries
2. Abdominal injuries/illnesses
3. Hip
4. Knee
5. Ankle/foot
6. Shoulder
7. Elbow
8. Wrist/hand
 Injury Report: for the above sites. Include mechanism of injury, signs &
symptoms, treatment, prevention. (6 points added to final grade; before
exam)
 Completion of each level of competencies in student handbook. (10 points
for each level)
