John and Elizabeth have been influenced to believe they're sinners by Gabriel, someone who is
not innocent himself.
God sees your true self, even if you or no one else does. John and majority of people around him
have viewed him as impure and sinful, but these judgments do not matter bc they're not from the
lord
I think its important that Gabriel did not smile back, throughout the whole book Gabriel hoped
that john would find God, and often referred to him as the devils son, but once John truly finds
God, Gabriel can not relieve himself of this resentment, proving that he is weaker in his faith.
