Personification Center
Personification: Giving an animal, object, or idea human qualities.
Example: The old car groaned into third gear.
Cartoon characters always seem to “save the day.” Underdog and Lightning McQueen(Cars) are examples of the action hero type. Mickey Mouse
and Spongebob Squarepants are of the average variety. Many of these cartoon characters have been personified. These characters are given human
traits such as the ability to speak and show emotions such as love anger.
Your Task: Create your own cartoon character using the clay provided. You will only have 10 minutes to make your character. Place your
character in the center of your data quad and complete the remaining sections of the quad. Please be sure to start the timer before you begin
your clay sculpture!

Lyric Poem Center
Lyric Poem: Short poem written to express the poet’s thoughts and feelings in a musical way.

Your Task: Listen to the song New Shoes by Paolo Nutini as a group. Follow along with the lyrics page
provided. After listening to the song, highlight the following elements of poetry on your lyrics
page as a group. *Hint: there may be more than one of each element.*
1. Yellow Highlighter: EXAGGERATION (stretching the truth)
2. Green Highlighter: ALLITERATION (repetition of the same consonant sound at the beginning of several words)
3. Pink Highlighter: RHYME (repetition of ending, beginning or middle of a phrase/sentence sound)
4. Purple Highlighter: MOOD (feeling created by the poet through use of words)
5. Blue Highlighter: REPETITION (repeating words, sounds and phrases)

Alliteration Center
Alliteration: Repetition of the same consonant sound at the beginning of several words.
Example: Angela Abigail Applewhite ate anchovies and artichokes.
Task #1 (7 minutes): Two people will need to complete the “Alliteration Challenge” worksheet
together. Get creative!
Task #2 (7 minutes): The remaining members of the group will use the magnet letters to
create alliterations. One person at a time creates an alliteration and
places it on the magnet board. The remaining members, one at a time,
recite the alliteration 3 times as fast as they can. The member that
recites without any errors wins! Rotate so each member has a chance
to create a magnet alliteration.

Task #2 (7 minutes): With a partner(s), play the “Poetry Board Game.” Be sure to read all directions before
playing. Please provide 6th grade responses to each mini-assignment on game board.

Onomatopoeia Center
Onomatopoeia: Words used to demonstrate sound.
Example: The water gurgled down the drain.
The little boy slurped his soup.
Your task: One person will reach into the “Picture Box” and pull out a photograph. The entire
group will brainstorm a list of colorful “sound words” to describe the photograph.
Please use the “Onomatopoeia Photography Challenge” chart provided to record
your answers. You should have at least 5 “sound words” per picture. Please
remember to work together!
