Macromolecules Notes
Proteins: polypeptide made of 2 or more amino acids
Function: storage, transport, regulatory movement, structural enzymes (end in “ase”)
Lipid: fatty acids (fats,oils)
Function: stores energy, insulation, makes up cell membrane
Carbohydrate: end in “ose”
Function: energy and structure
Examples: fructose, galactose, glucose, sucrose
Nucleic Acids: make up nucleotides which are molecules that make up the structural units of RNA and
DNA
Function: stores genetic information
2 types: DNA and RNA
3 Parts: 5 carbon sugar, phosphate group, nitrogen base (A,T,C,G)
How are macromolecules (polymers) formed/separated?
1. Dehydration synthesis: forms polymers by removing
water
2. Hydrolysis: separates polymers by adding water
