Disaster
◇
DISASTER AND
DISASTER RISK
◇
is an event that occurs suddenly/unexpectedly in
most cases and disrupts the normal course of life
in affected area (Introduction to Hazards and
Disaster, n.d.).
Happens when natural hazards exceed the
capacity of people and the community to
overcome a disaster (Pareno, 2016).

Disaster
◇
Disaster
A serious disruption of the functioning
of a community or a society involving
widespread
human,
material,
economic, or environmental losses
and impacts which exceeds the ability
of the affected community or society
to cope using its own resources
(UNISDR).
11
◇
According to UNISDR, it is a result of
the combination of:
■ The exposure to a hazard
■ The conditions of vulnerability that
are present
■ Insufficient capacity or measures
to reduce or cope with the
potential negative consequences

Let’s Try: Classify the following
disasters according to their nature
(geological, hydrometeorological,
anthropogenic, biological).

Disaster risk
◇
Disaster risk
Potential disaster losses, in terms of
lives, health status, livelihood, and/or
assets and services, which could occur
to a particular community or a society
over some specified future time period.
15
◇
◇
Signifies the possibility of greater
adverse effects when it happens
Factors that affect disaster risks:
■ Hazard
■ Exposure
■ Vulnerability
■ Coping capacity
