Like… ba't namatay ng maaga 'yung nanay ko? I was only five years old. And naniwala ako. Growing up. Naniwala ako. Even kay Santa Claus naniwala ako. And natutunan ko 'yung power ng kwento… Naging believer ako. To be able to be a writer, especially to be a really good writer, you have to be a believer… There's something beyond what you can see now. 2 RICKY LEE • • • I lost my mother when I was five years old. Namatay daw dahil sa aswang, but actually it turned out cancer. So if you look at my works, mga pelikula ko, even my novels, very strong ang aking mga nanay. I always come up with strong mothers na mga characters. Pinupunuan ko yung mga wala. I'm trying to recreate my mother every time in every mother character. And even if minsan hindi ako conscious about it, subconscious na ang gumagawa pinupunuan niya yung wala sa loob ko. In a way conscious ako sa maraming wala sa ‘kin and nakikita kong don napupunuan and I allow it. And because I'm conscious about it kelangan magkaroon ako ng nanay na hindi naman ganon ka strong lagi kasi magiging trite na naman sa ‘kin. So ginagamit ko ‘yung wala to drive me. That way lumalabas sa kwento at lumalabas personal na buhay ko. There's something more than what you can hear or you can touch. 'Yung kapre na nagbubuga ng usok, there's something behind that kapre. 'Yung nanay mo na merong pain na ayaw ipakita. 'Yung best friend mo na merong past na ayaw niyang ikwento. There's always something there that is not present. And yet it is there. So natuto akong maniwala sa ganon. • • • SAAN NAGSISIMULA ANG KWENTO? 3 I look for things na hindi magkabagay and then hinahanap ko 'yung wala para makonekta sila. So 'pag sinabing merong isang teacher ng nursery na ang bait bait at very caring at nurturing sa mga estudyante niya, at nakikita niya mga problema ng mga estudyante niya, at popular na popular siya at lagi nananalo ng "Best Teacher of the Year,” pero sa bag niya merong baril, then nakikita niyo 'yung imagination ko ngayon na hanapin 'yung wala. Bakit siya may baril? Ba't niya kailangang may baril? Ano ang kwento niya? Sino ba talaga siya? Beyond the nursery teacher na nananalo ng awards. So natutunan ko na ah para maka pagkwento hahanapin ko lang 'yung wala. And nai su supply ko 'yung wala. And that's how I started to write my stories. Natututo akong ma imagine ko 'yung wala. So I learned the value of imagining what's not there. And I learned to value the precious ness, the kahalagahan of the wala na na i imagine ko. It's a question of the meron at wala. We try to see what has to be seen, we try to see, what, what is not there, and yet it's there na itinago, 'yun 'yung trabaho natin, ang magpakita You have to realize that telling a story is not really telling, it has to be experiencing, ibig sabihin you cannot tell your audience one two 4 RICKY LEE three, you ang have to experience the one two threeness of the whole thing. Maski na magbigay ka ng sampung impormasyon, It might be better to just give two, merong meron na wala at merong love, but they experience it. So they have to experience it, the same thing pag nag create ka ng mundo hindi yan maki create kung ang dami mo ng detalyeng binigay na impormasyon. It has to be written, that world has to be created, in such a way that they will experience that world. And kung minsan ang hirap ipali wanag sa mabilisan paraan dito e, kung minsan maski ang dami dami mong sinasabi sa isang tao hindi nya naiintindihan. Then ‘pag pinakita na itong dalawa nagka ibigan na sa unang tingin, pag ganun ng lalaki pag ganun ng babae and then biglang tumama 'yung sunset sa mukha nung babae, then naintindihan mo na agad na in love sila at mundo 'yun where people can fall in love with just the sunset. It's the way it's rendered. May mahirap ipaliwanag pero nag combine na lahat 'yung music 'yung blocking 'yung etc 'yung tingin ng babae. Pero kung hindi mahusay 'yung artista mong babae maski may sunset at lahat 'yan at tumingin sya at sinabi ng director na tumingin ka at na in love ka hindi parin na experience 'yun nung nanonood hindi sya maniniwala. So in writing your world kinakailanagan ma experience sya ng audi ence rather than your audience is told. • • • SAAN NAGSISIMULA ANG KWENTO? 5 The shortest short story in the world sabi nila kay Ernest Heming way. Six words lang siya: "For sale, baby shoes never used." You supply the wala… sa workshoppers ko when we did this exercise, ang lumabas na kwento, is the usual kwento. Lagi siyang nakukunan kaya binenta 'yung baby shoes. 'Yung isa namang workshopper ko, horror ang inano. Itong shoes na 'to naglalakbay siya. At bawat nagsusuot na shoes ng baby nagig ing…tiyanak or what…'Yung isang workshopper naman… ginawang musical. Isang kumakantang baby shoes. So you can have lots of stories. The story that you choose will show whether pessimistic ka or opti mistic ka etc. your view of the world. So look for a material and then find the wala there and then extract the story that you want to tell. It will be your story. Activity K umuha ng 3 news headlines at 2 recent news from family or your neighborhood. Lagyan ng “What if…” in 1 to 2 sentences per topic.
