Overview of the University
The University of York is a major UK university dedicated to developing
autonomous critical thinkers via a culture of academic excellence and
cutting-edge research. York, as a member of the distinguished Russell Group, is
devoted to research-led teaching and to providing our students with a friendly
and inclusive learning environment.
All housing is on or near campus, and once enrolled, you will become a
member of one of York's ten colleges. Through a variety of social events and a
supportive system open to all students, all colleges promote inclusivity and a
valuable feeling of community. A diverse range of campus organizations, as
well as our college system, make it very easy for new students to assimilate
and feel at home during their studies.
York is a thriving city that has been named the "greatest place to live in the
UK" (The Sunday Times 2018). It's large enough to seem lively, yet small
enough to be friendly, with a diverse range of stores, museums, festivals,

History of the University
York has been a center of study since Anglo-Saxon times, and
York's authorities have talked about building a university for more
than 200 years. That objective was realized in 1963.
York had bolstered its scholarly credentials in the previous decade
with the establishment of the Borthwick Institute of Historical
Research and the Institute of Advanced Architectural Studies.
This helped persuade the government that York merited a
university, and permission was granted in 1960. Alderman John
Bowes Morrell, a strong supporter of the idea, donated 180 acres
of land in Heslington, and soon after, college buildings were built
around a newly created center lake. In the autumn of 1963, the
first 228 students came to Heslington Hall. A year later, King's
Manor
opened
as
the
university's
arts
center.
By the year 2000, the University of York had over 8,000 students
enrolled and was ranked among the best universities in the United
Kingdom.

Entry Requirements
International students need to establish their
English language ability if their first language is

Guide to Study at University of York
Heslington West and Heslington East are the names of the University's two
campuses. At least 15 members of the United Kingdom Parliament, 5
members of the House of Lords, 2 members of the Scottish Parliament, 1

The University of York is a very selective university, with the typical student
receiving a UCAS Tariff of 430, ranking 19th in the UK. Only 78.5 percent of
applicants are admitted, ranking the Russell Group, a self-selected consortium
of 24 public research universities in the United Kingdom, tied 15th. According
to the Times University Guide, York "is increasingly recognized as a permanent
fixture in the top rung of British higher education," and "no university had a
better reputation for teaching excellence."

2. Student Life:
York's collegiate system fosters a vibrant social environment.
Each student is assigned at random to a college to which they
will be assigned for the remainder of their degree. Most colleges
have a Junior Common Room for undergraduate students, which
is governed by the elected Junior Common Room Committee, a
Graduate Common Room for post-graduate students, and a
Senior Common Room, which is overseen by elected college
staff representatives.
York, a student-friendly city, has a plethora of possibilities for
both domestic and international students. It has a rich cultural
past with streets lined with restaurants, cafes, bars, taverns, and
other urban experiences. Aside from eateries, there are
numerous clubs where students can go out dancing, particularly
on student evenings. In addition, there are numerous cinemas,
museums, theaters, live music venues, comedy clubs, and art
galleries. There are clubs and courses, as well as historical
places, to explore in and around York for sports and outdoor
enthusiasts.

network UCAS, uploading a statement of motivation
(Personal Statement), expected test results, and a
letter of recommendation from a teacher. Students
may only submit one Personal Statement for each
university to which they apply (maximum of 5
choices).

5. Start Preparing for
the University:
It is strongly advised that students begin
preparing for the exam around the
conclusion of Year 11 or the beginning of
Year 12. If at all possible, begin reading
and considering what to write about in a
Personal Statement as soon as possible.
Some candidates, particularly those with
a limited command of the English
language, should begin preparing even
sooner.
