Using social media is a common activity for kids and teenagers nowadays. Social media platforms are familiar for us, like facebook, Instagram, or tiktok. Those are “must have” applications for people of today. You don’t need to wonder if you look a group of kids or teenagers doing selfie or spending hours for social media. But, do we realize the risk of social media, especially in long term? I don’t say that social media is bad, but we need to use it on “a certain portion”. I mean, have you ever thought that too long to play social media can cause addiction? And this social media addiction is one of the most psychological disorder which is suffered by kids and teenagers nowadays. When we are so close with social media, we feel so connected with others. This clearly can open our mind for different situations. But, we can’t just ignore the dark side of social media. One research said that the longer time people spending on social media, the higher risk of their mental health. Negative emotions are the main threat if we are addicted with social media. This includes unconfident, anxiety, depression, feeling inferior, out of focus. Those are serious problems which we should notice on. For example, people in depression could just harm themselves or others. Moreover, kids and teenagers are the most targeted persons to face cyber bullying. Hoax and misinformation are another risk. Hoax is malicious deception and very dangerous in manipulating a lot of people. That is why kids and teenagers need to be educated not to easily believe on unconfirmed news. People should check first the validity of news before share it to others. So, I encourage all of us to be aware and be wise to use social media. Follow only useful and inspired account which influence us positively. At last I want to conclude that as next generation, we still have a lot more useful things to do than just spending our time on social media.
