State Government I. Three branches: all three branches work together a. The legislative branch: make the laws b. The executive branch: governor(head of the executive branch) c. The judicial branch: review the state law, includes all the courts II. Meets different needs than the federal government a. Take care of state roads and parks b. Decide what you learn in school, the age of drive or marriage c. These issues are directly affect people every day. III. Federal government VS State government a. Only federal government can do certain things: declare war and print money b. Both can pass laws, raise taxes, and borrow money c. Federal government directs all states to follow same rule(ex: reduce air pollution) Local government a. Local city government: have executive branch(city council, mayor) and legislative branches b. Use country court system c. Provide important services (libraries, police, parks, road repair, fire department, local museum) Tribal Governments a. Native American have their own governments b. They are citizen of the United States and own tribal nations c. Federal government can pass the laws that affect tribal affairs d. Provide community services and encourage businesses to come the community
