Chapter 4 Guided Notes DIRECTIONS: While you read, pay attention to the stopping places outlined here, and briefly answer each question. This will be most efficiently completed if you respond at each stopping place and don’t wait until the end of the chapter to answer all the questions. If listening to the audiobook as a class, just tell the sub when to pause. While reading this chapter, I want you to specifically look for conflict! Here are the conflict slides if you need a refresher. (66) PREDICT: Is there smoke currently billowing on the mountain? What might happen if there isn’t any smoke? (Think: whose job is it to keep the fire going?) (67) Do you think the boys--particularly Henry and Johnny--are innately good or innately evil? (innate = born with) (68-71) Pay attention to the rising tension and conflict that is about to ensue. Respond to this question after reading page 71. What kind of conflict is present? Why is there tension? What is the problem? (68) No question here. Notice the descent into savagery and animalistic tendencies over the next few pages. You may take notes about that here. (69) “He noticed the blood on his hands”--what does this quote mean literally and figuratively? (71) REVIEW: What does each boy represent: Jack, Simon, and Ralph (this should already be in your notes somewhere)? Jack Simon Ralph (73) What is Ralph’s “weapon”? What figurative barrier is erected? (73) In a general sense, what causes meanness? (74) Why is Simon shameful? (75) PREDICT: What will this meeting be about? In this space, feel free to record any other ideas/questions from this chapter!
