Rise of Christianity
Christianity began as a Second Temple Judaic sect in the 1st century in the Roman province
of Judea, from where it spread throughout and beyond the Roman Empire, At its most basic,
Christianity is the faith tradition that focuses on the figure of Jesus Christ. In this context, faith
refers both to the believers' act of trust and to the content of their faith. As a tradition,
Christianity was a small, unorganized sect that promised personal salvation after death.
Salvation was possible through belief in Jesus as the son of God the same God the Jews
believed in.
Christianity emerged in the far reaches of the Roman Empire when Jesus of Nazareth
began his public ministry. Attracting large crowds throughout his native Galilee (in modern-day
Israel), he preached a message of forgiveness, love, and renewal. Rome has, for more than two
millennia, been an important worldwide center for religion, particularly the Catholic strain of
Christianity. The city is commonly regarded as the "home of the Catholic Church", owing to the
ecclesiastical doctrine of the primacy of the Bishop of Rome. Jesus of Nazareth began preaching
a message of love and forgiveness. His life and teachings led to the rise of Christianity. This
religion had a great influence on the Roman Empire and on people throughout the world.
The Rome of today is no longer the centre of a great empire. It is still globally important
though, with more than one billion people looking to it as the centre of the Roman Catholic
faith. It’s not a coincidence that the capital of the Roman Empire became the centre of Roman
Catholicism; Rome’s eventual adoption of Christianity, after centuries of indifference and
periodic persecution, gave the new faith enormous reach.
