INTRODUCTION
Cox's Bazar is the prime beach and tourist town in Bangladesh, situated alongside the beach of
the Bay of Bengal, beside the Indian ocean, having unbroken 120 Kilometer golden sand beach,
reachable through motor transport alongside the wavy water . The part of the 120 km beach is
named differently having diversified flora & fauna. It starts with 'Laboni Beach,' Sughandha
Beach' within the Cox's Bazar region and 10 km south is known as 'Himchari Beach',30 km fur
known as 'Inani Beach' and more 70 km off is the 'Teknaf Beach'.
St. Martin's Island is a small island (area only 8 km2) in the northeastern part of the Bay of
Bengal, about 9 km south of the tip of the Cox's Bazar-Teknaf peninsula, and forming the
southernmost part of Bangladesh. There is a small adjoining island that is separated at high
tide, called Chera Dwip. It is about 8 kilometres (5 miles) west of the northwest coast of
Myanmar, at the mouth of the Naf River.

DESCRIPTION AND OBSERVATION OF STUDY AREA
1ST DAY
We started our tour from Sholoshohor. Firstly, we got into the bus which was hired for us and
kept our luggage safely. The bus started at 7:40 am according to our teacher’s instruction. In
the mid-way, we had been given 10 minutes break for snacks in a restaurant near Cox’s Bazar.
After that, the bus again started for Cox’s Bazar and one-half hour later, we reached at our
destination. We reached hotel “Auster Echo” at 12:24 pm. Then, we took our lunch at “Poushi
Restora” near our hotel. After lunch, we took rest. Then, we started for BORI by jeep and
reached there at 3:07 pm.
Bangladesh Oceanographic Research Institute (BORI) :
At first, the members of BORI welcomed us gently and kept a presentation on “Overall
activities of BORI” in their seminar room. They presented us Vision, Mission, Background and
Wings of BORI. They also described the activities of different labs of BORI. They displayed
the vast possibility of blue economy. After the presentation, they took a “Question-asking
session” for us. Some of us questioned from their presentation and got their answers. They
served us some snacks after the session.
Then, we visited their labs one by one and observed all their works very carefully. Our teachers
divided us into 20 groups , each group had 5 or 6 members. My group was assigned to
‘Biological Oceanography Lab’ instructed by our teachers. So, we observed Biological
Oceanography lab with much attention and collected information about their works, which
would be describen in part-B. After observing all the labs, we left BORI and started for ‘Radiant
Fish World’. We reached Radiant Fish World at 7:04 pm.
Radiant Fish World:
At first, Mr. Kajol, who is a scientist of Radiant Fish World and also our senior brother from
Faculty of Marine Sciences & Fisheries, University of Chittagong received us cordially and
took a picture with us. He had also given a speech towards us. After that, we entered into RFO
one by one and observed all the marine fish species, vertebrates and invertebrates. There were
also some unknown species. I felt like walking in the ocean bottom and playing with fishes.
After observing all that, we left Radiant Fish world and returned to our hotel.
Then, we took our dinner at Poushi Restora and came back to hotel room. Thus, the day got
ended.
2ND DAY
We got up early in the morning and freshened up. We finished our breakfast by 8:30 am. Then,
we started for Fishery Ghat at 8:45 am and reached there at 8:56 am. When we reached there,
we got stuck into a heavy rainfall and stayed a safe place for some times. Because of the stormy
weather we couldn’t visit Maheshkhali and Sonadia Island. So, we had to return. Having better
3
surroundings, we came back to our hotel at 10:10 am. Our teachers called for a meeting to
make a decision at 11:00 am. After the meeting they came to a decision that we would go to
Inani beach in the afternoon. So, we took our lunch at 1:30 pm and took some rest.
According to our teachers instruction, we started our journey for ‘Inani Beach’ at 2:21 pm. Our
vehicle got stuck in the midway and we had to wait for 20 minutes. After a lot of struggles, we
reached Inani at 3:49 pm. Reaching there, our senior sister Safwa Binte Saif Supty showed us
how to profile a beach. Some of us helped her in beach profiling. We observed the procedure
carefully and I noted the values of different lengths perpendicular to shore. The position of that
area was 2114.055N and 09202.720E. After that, we took some photos with our teachers.
Then, we left Inani at 5:35 pm.
We took rest after reaching hotel and finished our dinner at 8:30 pm. A group among us
arranged a cultural program. The program started at 10:30 pm. The chief guest of the program
was the wife of our honorable Vice Chancellor and her family. The program started with our
national anthym. Then, some of our friends, seniors and juniors performed. We enjoyed a lot
till 1:00 am. Thus, the second day got ended.
3RD DAY
That day, we woke up very early in the morning. We waited for bus about 40 minutes. Getting
into the bus, we started for Teknaf at 6:25 am. We took our breakfast at the bus in the midway.
We reached Teknaf at 9:00 am. After reaching there, we had known that the ship wouldn’t
come because of bad weather. After a while, the authority came to a decision about the arrival
of the ships. So, We waited there till 12:00 pm.
Then, the ships came and we quickly got into the ship and took our seats. The name of the ship
was “Keyari Sindabad”. The ship started for St. Martin Island and we were enjoying the sight
seeing. Our lab assistant Mr. Musa described us the division area of Bangladesh and Myanmar.
In the meantime, we saw amazing groups of birds towards our ship. The name of the birds were
‘Seagull’. We reached St. Martin at 3:45 pm and got down from the ship after great difficulty.
Then, we checked into “Ruposhi Bangla Resort”. We refreshed ourselves after reaching the
resort rooms. We took our lunch at 5:00 pm at ‘CTB Restora’. Then, we came back to our
resort and took rest. Our teachers called for a meeting at 8:00 pm. After the meeting, we went
to ghat for collecting zooplankton at 8:45 pm. Mr. Musa and two of our senior brothers showed
us how to collect and preserve zooplankton. We observed the whole procedure of collection
and preservation. After collecting zooplankton, we came back and finished our dinner at 10
pm. Having dinner, we went to the beach in front of CTB restora and stayed there for half an
hour. Then, we returned to our resort and took rest. Thus, the third day got ended.
4TH DAY
4
We got up from bed early and started from ‘Paschim Saikat’ at 7:15 am for ‘Purbo Para’. We
collected different types of algae, seaweed, shell etc. We got so tired walking through the beach
and reached near ‘Golachipa’. Then, we came back to CTB restora crossing ‘Kona Para’,
‘Majher Para’ and took our breakfast at 8:50 am. Having breakfast, we checked out from
Rupashi Bangla Resort at 11:00 am. Then, we started for checking into a new resort named
‘Blue Sea Eastern Resort’ at 1 pm. After reaching there, we couldn’t find comfortable situation.
So, we returned into Rupashi Bangla Resort and again checked into that resort. We took our
lunch at Rupashi Restora. After lunch, we went to the beach and arranged “Beach Clean-up
Carnival” at 4:00 pm near our resort. We remained there till 7:00 pm and refreshed ourselves
by the gentle breeze. Then, we came back to our resort and took some rest. We took dinner at
10:30 pm and got ready for BBQ party. A cultural program was arranged by our seniors in
front of CTB resort, that was started at 11:30 pm. Our teachers also participated in that program.
The program ended with BBQ party at 1:45 am. Thus, the day passed by.
5TH DAY
We started for “Chera Dwip” at 7:43 am from ‘Jetty Ghat’ by motor boat. We collected some
information in the midway. We collected information of depth, water transparency, salinity
close to Navi Station, east side of St. Martin Island. The depth of that area was 7m, water
transparency was 3.5m and salinity was 35 ppt measured by Mr. Musa. The latitude of that area
was 5037N and the longitude was 921958.454S. We reached Chera Dwip at 8:35 am. We
visited the dwip about one and a half hour. We left that place at 10:00 am and reached Jetty
ghat at 10:32 am. Then, we took our breakfast and rested for a while in our resort. After that
we finished our lunch quickly and got ready for leaving St. Martin. We left St. Martin at 4:30

PART B
During the tour I was given a task to study on the Physical Lab of BORI. There I have been
introduced with some equipment and tools which are used in Physical Oceanography. The
name and description of those tools are given below.
Tools Name:
1.
2.
3.
4.
CTD Rosette Sampler
STD
Echo-Sounder
Niskin Bottle.
Description:
CTD Rossette: A rosette sampler is a device used for water sampling in deep water in order
to investigate its quality. A rosette sampler is made of an assembly of 12 to 36 sampling
bottles. The word CTD stands for “Conductivity,Temperature and Depth”.It is because we
can measure conductivity temperature salinity and density with a CTD rosette sampler of any
particular depth of Ocean.
STD: STD works just as the same as CTD rosette
Echo-Sounder: Eco-sounder is used for measuring water depth. Echo sounding is a type of
sonar used to determine the depth of water by transmitting sound wave into water. The time
interval between emission and return of a pulse is recorded, which is used to determine the
depth of water along with the speed of sound in water at the time.
Niskin-Bottle: A niskin bottle is a plastic cylinder with stoppers at each end in order to seal
the bottle completely. This device is used for take water samples at a desire depth without the
danger of mixing with water from other Depth.
