Transcript of the Interview Miguel: Good evening po sa inyo Ms. Jacqueline, Thank you for agreeing to do this interview with us today. This would take around 15-30 minutes, and it would be used in our final requirement for our subject leadership and decision-making. And for the introductions, I am Miguel Panahon, and these are my groupmates that will also be asking the questions Alyssa Marie Soguilon, Mitreo Ezekiel Reyes, and Marlesty Pacunio, who is not with us today but he will be on-call later. Before we start this interview, can you tell us about who you are and introduce yourself please? Ms. Flores: Okay I am Jacqueline Flores from Navotas City, Philippines and I am an entrepreneur owning a sari-sari store, selling school supplies and toys for kids and as well as doing online business with party needs items. Miguel: To start with the first question, Starting in business requires a lot of commitment and time, but others have failed in their ventures. How do you make a good start with business and what advice would you give to people that want to start a business? 3 Jacqueline: If you are doing business, my first advice is that first you should do your part to study on the things that specially for me, I start business last year. I think of the factors such as in our areas, what are the things that people do really need at that time. During pandemic, mostly people cannot go out so I think of items that are relevant to our neighbors and I think most school supplies at first (we’re starting with school supplies) kids cannot go out with far areas so I do think that by selling school supplies nearby students who would go by and it really hit the market because mostly students can go and buy school supplies, as well as the party needs. During those times, when those items are missing, people who cannot go out because of the curfew and quarantine periods so online business is really the norm at that time. So we should think of the factors that will really matters like that and you should think of the market. In our neighbors, I do some observations on their needs. Aside from their needs, I do look on my competitors, mostly they do sell sari-sari stores and what I realized is that only my business do sell such things, and I do look for unique things so that it will sell to other people. Miguel: Ok po ma’am, Alyssa do you have anything to ask? The question po is, may I know the location of your business po? Navotas City. Alyssa: Ok po. 4 Miguel: Ok po ma’am proceed po tayo sa next question, what products does your business sell? Ms. Flores: The products are school supplies, what else? I do also sell toys for kids, not expensive toys. Toys that can be found on public market and as well as party needs like balloons, banners, fall curtains. I focus on three items which are I think are needed at that time and I still continue to sell those things. Miguel: I see po ma’am. So when you first started your business niyo po, what strategies ang ginamit niyo po to market your business? Ms. Flores: The first strategy I used. I do consider the online, because yun nga po last year is we experience the pandemic so the online business is very on the boom so I used the media to sell my products. Everyday I do post on social media as well as different FB groups, and I also spent some time doing yung the tarpaulin po for others to know my store. As well as what else? Yung community, is for them to know my items as well as my store that I am going to sell these items so maybe if you would need these, you could ask me. So mga ganun yung mga kinokonsider ko as well as yun nga yung market ganun. Marami, maraming bagay na pinapagaralan aside sa capital, sa market, yung supplier, ganun po. 5 Miguel: Okay, so with that in mind po, ask ko lang din po na do you plan regularly for you business po? Ms. Flores: Sorry, do you plan? Marlesty: Is your business gaining profit? Miguel: Tanong niya daw po is- Ms. Flores: Medyo choppy po, medyo choppy dating sorry. Miguel: Ok lang po, tanong niya daw po if is your business gaining profit? Marlesty: What do you look for when building a team? Yung tanong- Ms. Flores: Opo, saan ako nalaglag? Miguel: Opo, yung tinatanong ni Pacunio, what do you look for when building a team po? Miguel: Ok po ma’am, and Reyes do you have anything to ask to ma’am? Ms. Flores: Opo, opo. Ezekiel: Does your business have a culture that your employees follow? 8 Ms. Flores: Sorry, medyo di ko narinig masyado. Ano po? Ezekiel: Does your business have a culture that your employees follow? Have you managed to stay calm and positive when your business faces problems and complications? For the last question po, tanong lang po namin what makes an effective leader po? Related to the question po. Ms. Flores: Effective leader? Tama po ba pagkarinig ko? Miguel: Opo effective leader. Ms. Flores: What makes an effective leader? Sa palagay ko po ang effective leader should be an effective follower kasi hindi ka magiging leader halimbawa kung meron ka ng mga subordinates lalo na sa business kung ikaw sa sarili mo hindi mo alam paanong sundin yung mga iuutos mo or iimplement mo sa mga tao so ikaw mismo kailangan marunong ka or alam mo yung mga gagawin mo kungyari iimplement mo yung mga ganitong bagay dapat sa sarili mo makikita ng mga subordinates mo ahh ganito si ma’am si sir ganito pala so mahihiya sila una-una sayo bukod dun yung respeto maggain mo sa mga subordinates mo kasi nakikita nila. Isa pa mamahalin nila yung work yung business kung ano man yan kasi nakikita nila na may pagpapahalaga yung leader sa ginagawa niya sa mga tao niya kung ano yung sinasabi niya sa mga tao niya nakikita nila na nagrreflect sa gawa ng leader so mamahalin nila yung work mamahalin nila ikaw as in irrespeto ka nila yun a good leader should be a good follower yun po ang what makes a good leader. Miguel: Ok po ma’am maraming salamat po and that will conclude our interview for today po. Salamat po ulit sa oras ninyo po at participation ninyo po Ms. Jacuqeline at have a nice day po. 10 VII. Individual Reflection Paper/Personal Plan Pacunio, Marlesty S. Our interview with Ms. Flores was very good even though with the technical difficulties and I have learned a lot from her. She is really kind, humble and polite. She is good at communicating with other people, I am comfortable talking to her even she is a stranger to me and I am a stranger to her. And I noticed that when being a leader you need to have a good connection with your employees, so your employees be comfortable talking to you and can open a suggestion or advice to you when it comes to your business. 11 Being a leader you need to be responsible and be patient like Ms. Flores. Be patient with your employees because not all employee is automatic will be good at first at their job. There are just humans that need to be comfortable with what they doing. Like Ms. Flores said she also makes mistakes. Being a leader you also need to work with your employees so your business has a smooth cash flow and has a good income. Just stay positive always when it comes to your work so you can manage it easily. Her experiences encourage me to have a business even I can only have a small business as a student. Panahon, Miguel Ezekiel D. While doing this final requirement, I have learned that being a leader requires a lot of commitment and passion. Especially with managing and leading a business. A leader needs to not just know his business but also understand it for him to make adjust and make decisions on the business itself. Such as planning, strategizing, marketing, managing, etc. With only knowledge and without application, a leader will not be able to run his business successfully. And with that said, he also cannot start his business without having experience and the right personality. Because without it, the business would not last long or be stable at all. This is very important to remember, so I note it when starting my own business in the future. Not all leaders will have a successful business because of the wrong mindset, but some may be successful due to them knowing what they should do. And that can be expressed by calling your business career a big journey in life. And as Ms. Flores said, a good leader should be also a good follower since if you expect your followers to follow and respect you, you should be able to follow your own rules and decisions first. Reyes, Mitreo Ezekiel S. Miss Jacqueline Flores of Navotas City is the owner of a Sari-sari store consisting of school supplies, toys, and party needs items. Also, a business-minded person and likes doing online business especially during this pandemic. According to her in the interview, that in putting a business we must do our part to study how to start a business. There are different strategies she made like considering the 12 online selling through social media platforms to help many people with their needs without going outside due to Covid 19 that affects many people of the community. She adds that in preparation for business the first factor is the capital, we cannot start a business without money to spend. The second is the market. We think the place of business applies to the community. Third, is the competition on how to be unique of products at a reasonable price. Fourth, is the delivery on how to bring products to customers. And the supplier, they have the special attention on this because they are the one who provides the products and services. She also told that her business gains profit, and to gain profit she likes that we must be friendly to our customers and be patient to earn the customer’s satisfaction. Customer loyalty happens when customers give high importance to your products and services. She ends her interview by saying LOVE YOUR WORK. Soguilon, Alyssa Marie R. Are people born to be leaders or made to be one? There are those that have the inert attributes that make effective leaders; however, those who actively understand the dynamics of good leadership may have an advantage when it comes to senior leadership levels that require delicacy in decision making and people managing (Ivypanda, 2020). A competent leader not only understands the ideas of leadership, but also how to put them into practice (Goleman, 2000). I've gone over the readings and reviews in an attempt to analyze all facets of leadership. During the interview with Ms. Jacqueline Flores, I have learned that the moment you decided to be a leader of your own business you are required to have skills, enough knowledge and you must have the potential on leading it. Being a great leader, I must be good at communicating with others, a good example to everyone, responsible, and has the unique ideas to remain my business attractive to consumers. Decision-making is possibly the most crucial aspect of a leader's job. It is the most significant part of the planning process since it determines many things, such as what goals their business will follow, what resources will be used, and who will do each required duty (Sharma, 2015). A step-by-step decision-making procedure can help me more calculate thoughtful decisions by defining alternatives and organizing relevant information. Through every step I made, I’m making sure it has a good result that will lead me to succeed because I’m aware 13 that every choice I had decided to do can impact my life either in a good way or in a bad way, it shapes me and allow me to identify my capabilities. I realized during the interview is that those good decisions can save my time, money, and stress. Good decision-making prevents me from wasting my effort and suffering the consequences I might face if I decided to choose the contrary. Moreover, when the outcome is excellent, it merely demonstrates that I made the proper decision. To be a great leader, I should consider and think thoroughly before I make a plan to avoid losses and keep my business running. IX.
