Cell Me On Your Cell

“Cell” Me On Your Cell
Objective:
In researching and producing a quality model of a specialized cell (e.g. brain, liver, muscle,
guard cell…) and its membrane transport structures, you will demonstrate knowledge of the
structures and functions of organelles in a wide range of eukaryotic cells. You should also
gain an appreciation for the fluidity, scale, and three dimensional structures of living cells.
Task:
Each group is to produce a three dimensional model of a specialized eukaryotic cell. Your model
SHOULD be done to scale. Accompanying your model will be a description and key for the
organelles present in your cell and a description of how the cell functions in relation to the organism
as a whole in maintaining homeostasis.
Marking: This project is worth 30 marks so you should get started on it as soon as possible.
1. Scientific Accuracy (20 marks)
a) Title and one page Abstract of the Cell Type and its Roles - this sheet will:
 accompany your cell model and should be well researched – don’t forget to cite your
sources (ie. include a bibliography)
 include a key and function description to your cell's organelles
 include a description of how the proper functioning of the chosen cell contributes to
homeostasis for the organism that it comprises.
 be grammatically correct and proofread: no typos!
b) Organelles Present and Properly Labeled
 all organelles that are pertinent to your chosen cell are shown and properly labeled
c) Scale is Correct
 all organelles presented are done to the proper scale with respect to the cell and its
outer membrane.
2. Appearance (10 marks)
a) Cell Structures look like currently accepted representations
 from your research, try to find artists' interpretations that match scanning electron
micrograph (SEM) pictures of your cell's organelles and transport systems.
b) Colour has been used to accent different features of the cell
 colour is used effectively and does not take away from the legibility of the cell labels
and/or structures.
c) Overall impression and three-dimensionality
 quality of model is apparent: evidence of greater than a "night before" effort.
