He started with construction as his first business, with government projects as his first projects. As time passed by, he started accepting private projects which continued until the present time. Moreover, Mr. Duller used the Filipino language in answering the question as it is the language, he is most comfortable using in. Co: Can you tell us more about yourself? Co: Was it always your dream to become an entrepreneur? Co: How old are you when you started you own business? What were the challenges during early years of your business? Co: Did you find yourself in the verge of giving up? Can you tell us your story? Mr. Toni: kahit minsan, di pumasok sa isip kong mag give up. Ilalaban ko talaga to. Asis: in our university, we have core values of fortitude, excellence, or urightness, do you also have certain values that follow and observe in your business opereations? Mr. Toni: para sakin, oo pero sarili kong diskarte hindi ibig sabihin eto pwedeng mag ganito (gumana) sayo ganun Asis: in growing your businesses, do you consider providing an opportunity that will benefit your employees? Pag nasa legal business, kasama talaga yun. Truz: how did you utilize your power or position in the company to lead or manage your staff in order to grow your business? So nandun yung set-up na mag gagalangan tayo, may respetuhan. Truz: was there any situation where your wokrers led your company down the wrong path? And how did you deal with them? Truz: how do you motivate them to keep up their good work? Truz: as a business owner, were there any missed opportunities or significant risks you had to deal with? Can you tell us why did it happened, and how did you manage to overcome those situation? So napatigil yun, magt2 years napatigil. Santos: What planning do you do especially that you handle not one, but five business organizations? Krisha: Since it is mentioned po that you handle a lot of businesses, do you manage them hands -on? Or what is your leadership style in managing various businesses? Krisha: How do you cope with a lot of competitors? What distinguishes your businesses from others? Tapos may opisina ako, puntahan nila ako. Binenta sakin yung lote so malaki yun 800 sqm. So pag tuturuan mo, susundin nila tinuturo mo. Madrigal: Looking back from the time you started your business, what do you think is your unique selling proposition that made a huge contribution in your business? Madrigal: That is it po, we would like to thank you po for your time! 14 Photo Documentation Image 1: E-mail sent to inform the interviewee about the interview Image 2 & 3: Photo Op with Mr. Duller 15 Edited video that shows the highlights of the virtual interview: https://feueduphmy.sharepoint.com/:v:/g/personal/2021059291_feu_edu_ph/EYtf2tk6ZRpNr5VAccWLoHABJYE47uKg ENnaK-VeZm-T1w?e=hb7yHb Image 5: La Cosina Antonio retrieved from La Cosina Antonio’s FaceBook page 16 Individual Reflection Paper/Personal Plan Asis, Ann Roselle A successful entrepreneur possesses strong characteristics and perspectives. It is accomplished through the interaction of the leader, the follower, and the environment. During the interview, Mr. Duller brought up some interesting and valuable points that I could apply in my daily life. When he first started his company, he made a detailed business plan. It included, among other things, marketing analysis, competitor and market research, and financial requirements. His values developed along with the journey. I could see happiness and fulfillment in his eyes. When we first met Mr. Duller, he greeted us with humility, telling us not to expect too much from him because his business isn't as big as we thought. It piques my interest in knowing more about him. It's a big adjustment for him, and he had a lot of difficulty managing a business when he first started in 2002. He mentioned that he was bullied by a huge construction company with a large fleet of trucks and resources. But he didn’t let it stop him from continuing his interest in the world of business and construction. "Ilalaban ko ito," he said to us, is a powerful phrase. It served as motivation for him to work even harder. To be a leader, you must be knowledgeable, compassionate, and courageous. It doesn't matter where you come from, how much money you have, or how much knowledge you have, as long as you're willing to fight for your dreams. Just be consistent in what you’re doing and treat the people you meet along the way nicely, especially the people you work with. I can relate to his situation because I, too, have been bullied because of my volleyball skills and my small business sewing shop. I felt small in comparison to the people around me. Some are doubtful of my abilities. Strangers are sometimes the ones who support me the most. Managing a business and being a student athlete is a difficult task. However, listening to interviews with successful people and meeting people like Mr. Duller serve as role models for me and inspire me so much. I hope that one day I'll be in a meeting room too, in front of students, telling a story to give an inspiration of how I overcame my fear with the values I learned, hard work, and strong faith that kept me going to be a successful leader and businesswoman. I realized that my education and character as a person are worth it. 17 Aniel, Nikki Laureign Upon conducting an interview together with one of the successful leaders we have come across, such questions are present like “What makes them a good leader?” Basically, it may appear to be a simple question, but comprehending it would definitely assist us in practicing on how to develop ourselves as good leaders. Certainly, without our own experiences and observations, we won’t have enough knowledge about leadership. As an aspiring Real Estate CEO, a leader should create a proper communication between the employees in the field. To be a leader, it is highly encouraged to have effective communication. Moreover, a leader should be aware on preventing complications along the process of communication of one person to another. Personally, managing a business is difficult, especially if it is your first time and you have no prior experience at all. You are still adjusting to the situation, wondering how you will gain people’s trust and captivate their interests. That’s why, when we had an interview with one of the successful leaders we have come across, we asked him a few questions. And based on his responses, you can tell how driven he is to achieve for more, despite the hurdles he has encountered. Also, according to the interviewee, one of his friends assisted him in learning how to run a business, which I believe is a significant benefit because no one can be successful on every first try. In a growing business, there will always be ups and downs along the way as it can help us in gaining more and more knowledge that we can put to use. Giving up, on the other hand, should not be an option because it simply implies that you do not have hope to be what you are attempting to accomplish. Encountering difficulties does not mean what you did was wrong, it simply means that it is preferrable to give your best of best rather than settling down for less than an average. A failure won’t dictate on how will you become after the long run. To sum up, in order to be a good leader and be successful, one must learn to accept failures and learn from it. We never know, the experiences and challenges can lead to variety of opportunities and will most likely have a reward of fulfillment, satisfaction and contentment of accomplishments. Through modifying their leadership skills, they can definitely assist others. 18 Co, Maria Kristine After interviewing Mr. Antonio C. Duller, who manages and owns five businesses, as a Marketing Management student, I have learned a lot of things from him. At first, he told us that he did not really see himself as an entrepreneur before. Way back 1984, he studied architecture, however, because of difficulty of life and lack of money, he was not able to finish the degree. That was the time when he started working as a craftsman and started being an entrepreneur in the year 2000. He told us how difficult it was when he was just starting because aside from being an undergraduate, he did not know anything about managing a business. He really worked hard to get where he is now. He was also thankful that he had a friend who taught him how to run a business. I really admire Mr. Toni’s hard work and patience. His story was really inspiring. Even though Mr. Toni was an undergrad, knew nothing about business when he first started, and there were times when successful business owners belittled him, he did not think of giving up. He started from scratch and now, he is a successful entrepreneur who owns not just one, but five businesses. I have realized that with hard work, perseverance, and the eagerness to learn, we could be successful in life. In addition, we should not be ashamed of asking our mentors, friends, or people who know how to run a business because there is nothing wrong with that. We must have the courage to learn and develop new skills and trust our own timing. I also became more inspired as we asked Mr. Toni how he manages and leads his employees/staff. He always makes sure that his staff receives their complete benefits, and he also told us that he treats his staff equally. Mr. Toni said that as long as they respect each other, then that is already good enough for him as co-workers. He also mentioned that when making decisions, he is always considering the opinions of his staff and makes sure that his staff can easily approach him without feeling intimidated or scared of him as a manager. I admired him for his perseverance and hard work, but I admired him even more when he told us how he is as a leader. Working is never easy but having a good leader in a business/company inspires its employees to do better. If I were to ask, I would rather have a difficult task with a kind boss/leader than an easy work with a selfish leader. This made me realize that no matter how successful I am in the future, I should always stay kind and down to earth. 19 We also talked about how the pandemic affected Mr. Toni’s businesses and his employees. Mr. Toni said that his businesses were really affected by the pandemic, especially his restaurant. However, he also said in the interview, “Apektado talaga.. My groupmates and I were really surprised by Mr. Toni’s kindness and attitude as a manager and business owner. We were all so amazed by his leadership style and how he handles all his businesses. In conclusion, I learned so many things from Mr. Toni and this is a huge help for me because I also want to be an entrepreneur or a manager soon. When starting a business, we should have the courage to take the risk and to not give up no matter how many challenges we face as we start a business, and no matter how difficult life is in general. Hard work indeed pays off. I remember this quote I read from Twitter that says, “In order to succeed, your desire for success should be greater than your fear of failure.” Aside from being a hardworking person, I have also realized that attitude and character are also important in achieving our goals in life. The way he talks about his business, and success was not overly proud hence we did not feel intimidated. In fact, when we asked him how he would like to address him, he told us to just call him “Tito Toni”. Sir Toni or Tito Toni is such a humble person despite his great success. It made me realize that no matter what our current life situation is, we should always stay kind to one another. We should always keep in mind that good character leads to success. With that being said, I am grateful that my groupmates and I were able to interview not just a successful entrepreneur, but also a great and very kind person. We learned a lot about starting to run a business, what attitude and mindset we should possess, the importance of having a good fellowship with your co-workers, and the importance of having good values not just in business, but in life as well. We are so thankful for this opportunity to interview a successful yet very humble entrepreneur; all of us were really inspired and motivated after the interview. 20 Madrigal, Richie May The word “leader” is not just a mere title, it is more than just exposing your power and flaunting your position. Taking the responsibility of being a leader comes with understanding your followers and the situation you are all facing. In the interview, I have gained a wide range of knowledge especially in my situation where I have been constantly appointed to lead a school project during my senior year in high school. His experience taught me how to humble myself in every situation. Moreover, he inspired me to start the business that has been sitting in my thoughts for months now. Personally, the reason why I took a course that is related to business is because I believe that I am a businessminded person and I will do well in this field and learning how Mr. Duller proceeded with his businesses without a prior knowledge to the field, it pursued me to do the same. He also shared the process on how he discovered his restaurant “La Cosina Antonio”. His restaurant was an old two-story house and he bought it because he had some other plans, but while fixing it, he thought of an idea of making it into a restaurant. Mr. Duller mentioned that he was inspired by the famous Filipino dining restaurant Maxx’s because its interiors were the same as the old house he was working with, and with that he grabbed that opportunity to make it his own version. Mr. Duller believed that it is God-given because at the same time the name of Pila, Laguna’s patron saint is St. Anthony de Padua (San Antonio de Padua) which is why he also named it La Cosina Antonio. Mr. Duller’s story inspired me to grab every opportunity I can see in order to make my future business grow, or if not, I am going to make my own opportunity. Concluding, Mr. Duller is a great leader, he is not afraid to take risks and is always making every situation an opportunity, and with my dreams too, I will strive to do the same thing so I can succeed with my plans. 21 Santos, Krisha Claudine It was a great privilege to interview a successful leader and discover how they achieved their successes. Also, to have a change to know their journey to success and know that some of the most successful leaders struggled and failed before achieving their goals and dreams. Moreover, everyone has a different timeframe for when they will thrive and achieve their goals and ambitions. And which there are also some paths we wanted to take but is not meant or right for us because we have a destined path where we can flourish and shine. Creating this paper fascinates me because it allows students to learn about different leadership styles and relationships leaders have with their followers. Completing the paper was stressful, but we worked in completing it despite a heavy workload. Working in groups was beneficial because we were able to merge all of our ideas into one and then come up with a single concept. It was good that we were assisting each other in completing our tasks, and I'd like to point out that my group did not argue about which part of the paper to get and complete. And to our group representative, who was great in dividing the parts evenly among us, the members. Reaching out to one of the successful leaders was challenging because they were busy with their schedules and had several meetings to keep, but we were able to squeeze in a short interview time. During the interview, it was truly inspiring to hear the story of our successful leader interviewee; he inspires us to succeed despite the obstacles, and to use our challenges as inspiration to succeed. Our presentation preparation was planned so where we could understand the flow of our presentation and actually comprehend the entire paper so that we could discuss it with our lecturer. By listening to the interviewee, I am inspired to keep working toward my goals, even if I am struggling, because if you truly love what you are doing and want to pursue a career in that industry, you must be willing to take risks and endure hardships. I realized that if you truly want to pursue your passions, you will not stop until you achieve your goals, and that is how you will achieve your goals. Using your challenges as inspiration to succeed because, after considering the circumstances, you will realize you don't want to be stuck in it, which is why you will use it as motivation. As our interviewee mentioned, it was not his desire to take the business career; instead, he was pursuing architecture, but due to circumstances, he had to give up his goals and pursue the business path. I realized that we have a destined path where we can thrive; this does not mean that if we do not achieve the dream we desire, we will not be successful. Rather, it is 22 how we motivate ourselves to succeed with many opportunities; we should not focus solely on one goal, but rather on ways to succeed. To elaborate, we should not primarily focus on achieving a specific career goal in order to be successful. For example, if you want to pursue a career in business, you will go to great lengths to get it; nevertheless, if you have already overcome enough obstacles to get there. And that's when you'll realize that maybe that path was not for you, and that you should try something else, like pursuing a professional career as a doctor, lawyer, or engineer. Then, as a result of pursuing different path, you would discover that "here is where I am meant to be." Overall, don't limit your success to one career; instead, start dreaming about success and figuring out how to get there. As time goes by, we will continue to face challenges and hardships throughout our lives, but we must not allow them to prevent us from reaching our goals. Look for motivation that will assist us in achieving our goals. Because all of the difficulties and struggles we will face will only be a part of our journey, and we will be able to achieve our goals one way or another. Let us continue to dream and live happily ever after. 23 Truz, Karyme Isabella Being able to pick someone when they are down and motivate them to strive to their full ability and helping them mold their selves at their greatest potential. True leaders, I believe are naturally born and have been harness in time. To be an effective leader, you should know when to open up yours ears and close them. They are certain times where we should listen to our subordinates, and they are times when we must know when not to. We must know how to analyze situations and dilemmas to thoroughly know how to handle them. We must be fair to everyone and most importantly we must respect everyone's capabilities. A true leader would see through his subordinates and would know on which area they have great potential and would excel. Everyone has different things they are good at and so a true leader should know who, where and what task to give it's subordinates not just for them to excel on their respective potentials but also for the team to have an efficient and effective workplace where everyone succeeds and is happy and so every work, they do will have a positive outcome. The hardest part of being a leader for me, I think is that you do not hold your subordinates minds and their lives, no matter how much we show them their potential, no matter how much we motivate them if they have zero interest, it will be zero productivity from them and this one of the dilemmas most leaders will probably have to go through when they decided when to let go of someone specially if it's already holding back the whole team and its progress. This is just one of its cons, but I think it's the hardest part for a leader to do when he has to give up on someone or else he will sacrifice the whole team and its success. I have learned that to be an effective leader is you need to be passionate with what you do, you need to have a goal in order to be a successful leader. And as we interact more with the leader it feels like were being bought to his life journey of him being in his lowest and him on his successful time. His life is not as easy as we think he also struggle in his life he didn’t became successful right away but because he is brave because he knows if he didn’t do it who will? And he also thinks about his family’s future. And becoming one of the greatest leaders you need to fall a lot of times in order to achieve the top because there is no easy way you need to stumble again and again in order to achieve it. The leader that we interview is one of a kind leader because he treats his workers as a family and I think that’s a good strategy to gain the trust of your workers. As we talk about his experiences i have learned about how you should make money in this kind of generation, especially this pandemic you need to learn more about the business you should make before 24 going through it, you need to know how your business is different from others. And I’ve enjoyed the interview because I also gain knowledge from it.
