It is a sole proprietorship business owned and managed by Mr. Billie Jhonson Quido. Mr. Quido’s business is originally their family business and his third type of business. The stainless steel kitchen equipment industry is growing not only in the Philippines but also in the world. When making high-quality foods, it is important to use the right kitchen equipment. In accordance with this, an increasing number of people are now using stainless steel kitchen equipment in their houses. First, using stainless steel in kitchens avoids risks of having scratches and stains in the kitchen especially since the kitchen is always used every day. Second, it doesn’t release toxic substances and doesn’t change the color, flavor of foods, and their smell. Third, stainless steel is easy to rinse. Because of its smooth surface, it will not be difficult for people to clean the equipment that will result in saving their time and for doing other things. Transcript of the Interview MS. BELLO: Good Evening sir Billie! Thank you for this opportunity to make a short interview, in line with this the interview strictly follows and observes the Republic Act 10173 or the Data Privacy Act 2012 when running the interview. The interviewers will only use all information given in the Thought Leadership Presentation of Leadership and Decision-Making Course. And the members of this group are: Genina Ramilo, Monique M. Bello, Kathleen Faye U. Victoria, Rhea Marasigan, Rolann James Losito, and John Demetrie Labios. MR. LOSITO: Mr. Quido, can you give us some information about yourself and your business? MR. QUIDO: I’m Billie Jhonson Quido, 39 years old from Caloocan City. Yung business ko is stainless fabrication. We manufacture stainless kitchen Equipments. Usually mga tables, mga pang restaurant, mga ganon. Ayun. [I’m Billie Jhonson Quido, 39 years old, from Caloocan City. My business is stainless fabrication. We manufacture stainless kitchen equipment, usually like tables and restaurant equipment.] MR. LABIOS: Thank you for that sir, can we now proceed to our interview questions? MR. QUIDO: Ok sir, sir John. MR. LABIOS: For our 1st interview question, As a business person, what do you prefer? Manage the business by yourself, manage the business by yourself and by family members, manage the business by yourself and hire employees? And why is that your choice? MR. QUIDO: For me syempre mas maganda if, I manage my business pero syempre minsan ‘di natin maiwasan na may mga family members na gustong pumasok sa akin. [For me, it is better if I manage my business. But, there are times that some family members and friends want to work for my business. Honestly, I prefer to manage the business by myself, because I will only make decisions by myself. It is hard to have family members in the business because sometimes when you need to scold them, you will refrain yourself from doing it because they are your family. I also prefer to hire employees.] MR. LABIOS: Ok sir, thank you sir. For our second question, what is the one thing you enjoy the most about your business? MR. QUIDO: Ah syempre yung ano, unang-una yung experience. Syempre sa pakikipag-usap sa ibang tao, siguro second thing nalang yung income. [The one thing that I enjoyed the most is the experience like talking to other people and the customers. For me, the income would be the second thing.] MS. VICTORIA: Ok sir for the third question po, do you keep a journal or record of your daily business operations? Like a separate [journal], [for example] a journal for your personal use and for the business? MR. QUIDO: Ah oo, syempre importante yun eh. [Of course, it is important. First, the journal is needed for BIR but I also keep one for myself to track and record the business including the sales, progress and loss. Second, it will be our reference on the performance of the business if it is successful or not.] MS. VICTORIA: Thank you for that, sir. For the 4th question, how long have you been into this kind of business? Is this your first time/second time/third time to venture into entrepreneurship? MR. Then, nag-tiangee kami sumunod. [I am in my fourth year in this stainless fabrication business. This is not my first time doing business. My first business was as an event’s organizer with my wife and it lasted for four years. Unfortunately, something bad happened, the bazaar did not last longer and eventually failed. Tiangges suddenly came out. Bazaar and tiangge are different. Later on, we tried tiangge and it took only 5 years but we lost it since online businesses emerged in the market, for example Shopee, Lazada. And the business we have now is our family business from my mother and father, I inherited and learned how to run, so far everything is doing good. ] MS. BELLO: Sir for the 5th question po, In life as well as in business, nothing is certain or future-proof? Do you plan to obtain or have obtained insurance security for your business? MR. QUIDO: Syempre uhm mas maganda kung may insurance syempre pag kunyaring... insurance for my business no tama? Yes mas maganda kung may ganon para if ever na medyo gipit tayo, meron tayong pwedeng puntahan [Of course, it is much better if there's insurance if ever... For my business right? Yes, much better if you have that, if ever that we are sort of money, there will be something to run on.] MS. BELLO: Ok, thank you po. So for the 6th question po. What inspired you to choose this path or choose the path that you took? MR. QUIDO: Syempre ano, family. [Of course, my family. Of course, we need to provide for our family needs, for my children, for their future. That’s usually the thing we all do to be more responsible if you already have a family. Could be more focused on their lives. Of course, you need to provide for your family's needs and wants, that’s why you need to be more hardworking, think of a way to earn.] MS. MARASIGAN: For the 7th question po, as an entrepreneur, do you consider yourself successful in business? And how do you define success? MR. [For me, I would say that my business is not yet considered as successful. But unlike before, when we are in need, we do not approach other people to borrow money because we can get something from the business. As I see it, it is a progressing business and not yet successful. I honestly believe that I can only define success if we have everything in life and make our children finish their studies, then I think that’s all and all we have to do is to rest. I think, that’s all. ] MS. MARASIGAN: Thank you po. 8th question po, how did you get through all of the hardship and challenges during this pandemic? MR. [Actually, it was hard to get through all of the hardship and challenges during this pandemic because I think that we are being tested on how stable or strong we are as a person. Other people who don’t have jobs and who are staying at home find ways to have earnings or income through delivering goods and services like grab and lalamove. Just like them, I find ways on how to cope with the situation because there are no customers. I need to think of strategies on how to approach and attract customers. This experience was hard but I needed to do it to have an income and to sustain my business.] MS. RAMILO: For the next question sir, what important advice would you give to those aspiring entrepreneurs? MR. [Based on my experience, my advice would be to dream big because if you will start a business, then you should aim for the highest level. It is not so often for us to dream so we should aim for the biggest dream we want.] MS. RAMILO: Thank you for that sir. And for the last question, what is one of the most complex challenges that you’ve faced as an entrepreneur? MR. QUIDO: Syempre yung pag nag-uumpisa. Syempre lakas ng loob, on my part, may makakalaban kang mga kaibigan, minsan kamag-anak ganon. Yung pag nag-uumpisa pero pag nagamay mo na yung business, is parang ima-maintain mo nalang. Or siguro mas ii-improve mo kasi kailangan, para updated ka lagi eh. Kailangan makakasabay ka sa panahon eh. Lalo na ngayon na puro online na, kailangan ganon. [Definitely the beginning. Certainly the courage, on my part, we can not avoid to compete with friends, sometimes relatives. It is a challenge most especially when starting but if you are accustomed to the business, you will only have to maintain it. Or I think, you have to improve it because it is necessary so you can be more updated. You need to match the time most especially today, more on online strategy.] MS. VICTORIA: Thank you for that sir that would be the end of our interview. One last thing po Sir Quido, we would like to request for a photo opportunity with you for our photo documentation. MR. QUIDO: Panong photo ano? [What type of photo?] MS. Opo. [Just look at the screen sir, the camera rather.] 1…2...3.... Thank you po. The interview that was conducted and all the information obtained will be only used for our activity in the Thought Leadership Presentation in our course, Leadership and Decision-Making. Thank you so much Sir Quido for imparting your knowledge and sharing with us your answers to our queries. Also, we thank you for sparing us your precious time. It is our pleasure to be able to have an interview with you today. That would be all, thank you so much po. MR. QUIDO: Thank you, thank you. Photo Documentation https://drive.google.com/file/d/1lw6yCDpOlHESsaoEc_3tfeEAR-h7jN7F/view?usp=sharing Individual Reflection Paper/Personal Plan Ms. Monique M. Bello Having the ability to influence and guide followers is a big opportunity for any kind of us. Leadership makes us stronger and proud. Because being an effective leader, a lot of skills are needed. To make us great leaders, we must have a vision and the passion to achieve success. Everyone can be a leader. In fact, maybe you’ve been a leader before but you didn’t realize. It is important to have leadership because it allows us to communicate and further improve our skills for a better outcome. I have realized that when building a company or a business I should consider having a passion and perseverance. Also it’s best to have durability as a leader in this time of crisis. During the thought leadership presentation of leadership and decision-making, it makes me understand and have a better knowledge on how a business runs and how I should act as a leader in the near future. This kind of opportunity is such a big help not only to me but also to my team. It is a privilege to have a short interview and talk with a businessman, as a college student it gives me thought and understanding of what kind of economy I may face if ever I enter business and probably I know what I’m going to do. Mr. John Demetrie Labios Being a leader is a very challenging task for anyone. Leadership comes with great responsibility. A leader is the one who is responsible for making the necessary decisions for his institution to become successful. Even before you become a leader, you will face many challenges that will challenge you on how great a leader you can be. It will also help you to know your strengths and weaknesses. Thought leadership presentation of Leadership and decision-making course helps us, future leaders, develop our skills as a leader by having an interview with an individual we call a successful leader in their business. It can be an excellent start for us since we can get some knowledge from a knowledgeable one who already has the experience and background to become a successful leader. As a future leader, I always want to learn more and improve my leadership skills, and I want to become a leader who will earn all my constituents' trust and respect. Having time to talk with someone who already has the background on becoming a successful leader is vital for us to improve. To become one of the few successful leaders comes great sacrifices, hard work, and learnings. In the interview, we make with Mr. Billie Quido, owner of Billie Quido Kitchen Equipment. Since he experienced the challenges that a business person can experience in his life before achieving success, it helped me realize that as a college student, future accountant, and individual, I must consistently be strong enough to face all the challenges that I will encounter. Sacrifice things that I don't need to be innovative and have many ideas inside my bag. Always stand up and find new ways to be a better leader. So that one day, I can call myself a successful leader that leads the business or institution I will work for in its success. Mr. Rolann James Losito A leader’s personality says a lot about how he/she leads an organization. A leader must have a strong characteristic and perseverance to overcome the challenges that come with influencing the members and the business itself. A leader must also be resilient in facing problems in the business because problems do not stop from coming as much as we want to get rid of them. And last, a leader must be brave and accept failures; he must have a strong will to persevere through the failures and challenges. The interview with Mr. Billie Quido turned out well and very inspiring because of all the hardships that he has been through. He discussed to us how his first three businesses were not successful and how he bounced back. It is a truly amazing story. Listening to him was very motivating for me because it is also connected to my course and desired path. I gained knowledge from the interview on how to be a leader and a businessman in the future. I also learned that we must face the failures of our decisions to gain more wisdom and experience then the next time we try again we are stronger and wiser with our decisions. Mr. Quido truly brought inspiration and advice in his success story and he was able to open up a huge door for me and my group mates to take challenges and dream big because you are only going to set the goal once, why not set the goal on its highest. Ms. Rhea Mae R. Marasigan Leadership indeed can be demonstrated in different ways. Every person has the ability to lead, and the road to success is paved with a series of ups and downs that will put your leadership skills to the test. The fact that we are being tested demonstrates how committed and motivated we are to accomplish the success we desire. A series of questions were posed to our chosen business owner about how he built and maintained his company. We were imparted with the knowledge that can help shape the leadership potential in us. Addressing the entrepreneur's need for direct control, in my opinion, demonstrates that he wants a solid structure and is willing to wait to attain his goals. He also stated that he is open to all possibilities, including friends, relatives, and employees, but that for the sake of everyone, he’d prefer to do it alone. In making business transactions, he values experience above all else, and the money is merely a bonus. Based on his responses, I must infer that he places a high value on personal development. Strategic and critical thinking could also be an advantage as he keeps a journal to record contracts and track the progress of his business as it isn’t his first time. He had a lot of past experience running a business, and we all know that experience and knowledge are valuable assets. For previous generations, the emergence of unavoidable conditions that bring downsides to one's organization didn’t become a hindrance to them continuing to establish new enterprises. Accountability is one’s duty to fully govern the business, as the interviewee speaks of having insurance as a practical idea. The way I see it, his objective of being able to provide for his family and their future shows that he is self-motivated to succeed in the field of his profession. Speaking of success, he stated that having everything in life could be a definition of success, but he also emphasized being able to finance his children’s education until they graduated. We all have different definitions of success and given that we are currently facing a pandemic, we are put on trial on how to cope up with the situation. Each setback for every individual makes them stronger. Being optimistic can help you stay sane since you can identify methods to run your business regardless of the circumstances. Mr. Quido's advice to dream big, in my opinion, urges us to have a positive attitude, desire, and enthusiasm. It somehow persuades us to be upbeat. As a business student and someday, an aspiring business owner, I believe that the knowledge and experience that the interviewee has imparted to us will be useful till the day that we establish our own enterprises. Many of my acquaintances have fought for years to establish their businesses, and anyone who has done so understands that it isn’t easy to start a business because it demands more than just money. If I’m being honest, it puts more pressure on me, but in a good way knowing that I’ll be more knowledgeable about the path that I’ll be pursuing. We spent a lot of time putting out this final requirement, and it is great that we all took the initiative to complete it. I learned that one of the most essential qualities an individual should possess is a high level of patience. Ms. Genina M. Ramilo The characteristics of a leader reveal a lot about how they will lead an organization. One must obtain strong characteristics that will help in overcoming the challenges and influencing its members. Hardships are inevitable, it will always come in our way as much as we want to get rid of them. All we have to do is to face it bravely and solve it intelligently because if we lose track, we will fail. However, failure is a thing that makes us stronger, if only we face it and take it as a challenge to be able to continue again. It has always been my passion to become an entrepreneur and run my own business. Unfortunately, I lack the courage to start a business and risk my money, time, and effort. I am afraid of failing and becoming a failure. As time went on, I realized that there is nothing wrong with failing because failure is another chance to survive and take on the challenge, but this time I would be braver. It takes a lot of sacrifices, discipline, and big goals to succeed in business. It is not an overnight success, but rather a long process of success. It was easy for our group to look for the best leader to interview because of the connection of one of our group members. The interview with Mr. Billie Quido is an inspiring connection and effective way of communicating with a leader. He discussed how he got started and overcame the challenges of his business. It is truly a motivating interview with him because we gained knowledge and understanding from his words. He linked his answers to the real-life situation which made us acknowledge and learn the essence of business and leadership in terms of success, failure, and the process. There is a fruitful inspiration and advice behind the story of his success and he was able to open up our minds and hearts, youth, to take the challenge and dream big. I realized that someday I am going to be a future leader since it is my dream to become one and in order to achieve it, I need to have a strong characteristic of being able to accept failure and challenges then try until I achieve my goals. Furthermore, our group performed well because we have delegated the task to each member and we have communication with each other, allowing us to complete the task excellently. Ms. Kathleen Faye U. Victoria There are many leaders in our society. Some are considered great while some are not. The only thing that can distinguish them is their attitude, mindset, and how they handle certain challenges and tasks that they encounter during various situations. As they handle these challenges and tasks, they also discover their strengths and weaknesses when it comes to handling business and others. When doing business and other things, there will always be failure and downfall before success. Since I started my senior high school journey especially in the ABM strand, there are many stories about businessmen and entrepreneurs that I heard and encountered as different lessons were discussed. It also includes different styles of showing leadership. Some stories had great endings and commendable journeys, some are still in the process of growing but some didn’t have a good ending. Alongside these lessons, different techniques and approaches about how these businessmen and entrepreneurs handle, lead or manage businesses were always discussed. These things always fascinate me because their approaches are accurate for the type of business they have. But among these all things, I often wondered what and how a businessman or business person feels when they have their own business or an entrepreneur when managing their own business. It is a great pleasure and an honor for our group to have an interview with one of the leaders and businessman, Mr. Quido. His words and answers are very fruitful for us, accountancy students, that can help us in the future. He was able to overcome different challenges and obstacles with positivity and a great mind as a true and good businessman. His current business was his third business after the previous two businesses that sadly failed. At a young age, he was able to learn and reflect from his mistakes and actions on why his previous two businesses failed. Based on these mistakes, I think that learning from our past actions are the greatest learnings that business persons can have. During the interview, I noticed that he has a good heart because he defined success as for his kids to finish school and graduate college. Through Mr. Quido, I was able to realize that having a positive attitude, prepared mind and strong heart toward business alongside failures and obstacles can let us be able to reach our big dreams not only in business but in life in general. Acknowledgment The interviewers and group members would like to express their gratitude and appreciation to everyone who extend their hand and assistance for this Thought Leadership presentation, especially to the following: To Mr. Leonardo Cada, Jr., their instructor, for his time, patience, and helpful comments which were essential in this activity. To Mr. Billie Jhonson Quido, the interviewee, for sparing his precious time and effort, for accepting the invitation of the interviewers to be their interviewee, and also for sharing his thoughts and answers to the queries asked. And above all, to Almighty God, for giving strength and wisdom to conduct this interview and making it possible. References Abimis, R. (2020, March 18). 8 reasons to choose a stainless steel kitchen.
