The motive of this research came from mere curiosity of what a sustainable future could look like. In
search of innovation, I forage through the depths of my mind to find an idea befitting to challenge this
philosophy. Always had passion for sustainable architecture and I had tons of ideas - but I went with the
craziest one. **A high-rise bamboo project.** Further innovating the present perception of bamboo
architecture, I present my 𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐮𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐬 entitled:
𝐓𝐨𝐫𝐫𝐞 𝐝𝐞 𝐊𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐚𝐧: Neo-vernacular Architecture for the Future of High-rise Housing (A Researchbased Thesis)

With half of the population of the Philippines moving into cities, the demand for sustainability continues
to grow as the rate of urbanization increase exponentially. A phenomenon that poses a threat to our
resources and the environment. Carbon emissions are on the rise, along with the continuous depletion
of nonrenewable building material. With this, the project proposes the use of the fastest growing plant
in the world - the bamboo.

In search of new ways of building sustainable, the project adapts the methodologies of **mass timber
construction**. The idea is not to introduce something completely new, rather an alternative way of
building that could be achieved with local resources. And since the material used for mass timber cannot
be grown in the country, the project proposes the utilization of bamboo. With the majority of the global
bamboo growth (63%) distributed in Southeast Asia, this gives the country the opportunity to tap into a
rapidly renewable resource. An effective carbon-negative material with structural properties rivaling
that of concrete and steel.
