September 2021 PE Curriculum SEASONAL THEME FALL SPORTS THEME FOOTBALL & YOGA GRADE LEVEL K-8 LESSON 1: SCARECROW TAG (GROUP GAME) 1 Spread children out and pick one child to be the farmer (chaser) On go, the farmer runs around the room and tries to tag the other children. If a child is tagged they must freeze in their spot and hold their arms out like a scarecrow A child who is not tagged can crawl between any scarecrow's legs to free them Rotate farmers every few minutes or add extra farmers in LESSON 2: FOOTBALL SKI LL STATI ONS I 2 Create a series of football skill stations. For example, Running Back Jukes, Floor is Lava, Sock Tag, Steal the Bacon etc. Design a station card for each skill and post them on the wall around the gym. Divide students between stations and have them begin the activity. After 5-8 minutes, blow whistle, rotate, and repeat. LESSON 3: PI GSKI N CATCH (RELAY RACE) 3 4 Equipment: 10-20 footballs, hula hoops Place students into relay race lines at one end of the gym. Each team has a hula hoop filled with footballs about 20-30 feet away. On "go" the first child must run across the room to the footballs, pick one up and throw it to the next child in line. If caught, the ball is placed in an empty hula hoop behind the line. If missed, the child picks up the ball, runs across the room and attempts to throw to the next child in line. Repeat until all footballs have been moved from one hula hoop to the other. LESSON 4: YOGA STATI ONS I Create a series of yoga pose stations. For example, Flamingo Pose, Warrior Pose, Happy Baby, Cat Cow Pose, etc. Design a station card for each pose and post them on the wall around the gym. Divide students between stations and have them begin the activity. After 3-5 minutes, blow whistle, rotate, and repeat. Get our printable Yoga Station Cards at: https://americancoachingacademy.com/september/ LESSON 5: HOOP FOOTBALL (GROUP GAME) 5 Equipment: 2 large bins, 20 sponge footballs (or other sponge balls) Place one bin at each end of the gym. Divide the class into 2 teams with a middle line separating them On "go" the children begin tossing footballs across the room and into their opponent's bins. The first team to get 2 balls into their opponent's bin wins. Adjust difficulty by making the bin closer or farther away, or allowing kids to play "goalie" LESSON 6: FOOTBALL SKI LL STATI ONS I I 6 Create a series of football skill stations. For example, Passing Circle, Hula Hoop Agility, Shuttle Run, Fancy Footwork etc. Design a station card for each skill and post them on the wall around the gym. Divide students between stations and have them begin the activity. After 5-8 minutes, blow whistle, rotate, and repeat. Get our printable Football Skill Station Cards at: https://americancoachingacademy.com/september/ LESSON 7: THROW & GO RELAY RACE 7 Equipment: 2 large cones, 2 utility balls, 2 footballs Divide your class into two teams and line them up at one end of the gym. At the other end, set up 2 cones with a utility ball balanced on each as a target On "go" the first child throws their football across the room and tries to knock the ball off the cone. If they hit the target, they set the cone and ball back up and return the ball to the next player. If they miss, they return the ball to the next player. First team to hit the target 5 times wins LESSON 8: YOGA STATI ONS I I 8 Create a series of yoga pose stations. For example, Side Bend, Warrior Pose, Belly Pose etc. Design a station card for each pose and post them on the wall around the gym. Divide students between stations and have them begin the activity. After 3-5 minutes, blow whistle, rotate, and repeat. LESSON 9: PE ESCAPE ROOM - "MOBI LE MADNESS" 9 This is a fun PE lesson plan that includes cognitive skills, social-emotional skills and fitness. Explain to your students that they were transported inside their phones by a freak electrical storm. The only way to get out is to crack a secret code and complete a series of fitness challenges. Create and encode the fitness challenge instructions using an emoji substitution cipher Provide students with the cipher instructions and the encoded fitness challenges. They must work in teams to crack the cipher, decode the fitness challenges, then complete them as a team. Once done, they can “escape from their phones" and win the game. Get the printable PE Escape Room here: https://americancoachingacademy.com/september/ RAI NY DAY LESSON Create football and yoga themed crossword puzzles, word searches, coloring pages or other printable activities the students can do in a classroom Include words related to football and yoga terminology, history etc. MONTHLY FI TNESS CHALLENGE Create a calendar for September 2021. For each day, add a short fitness task for your students. Tie in holidays and observances where possible. For example, September 18th is National Dance Day. Have students play their favorite song and dance to it for 10 minutes! Print and hand out the calendar to your students. Offer a prize to those who complete at least 20 tasks in a month.
