Introducing Cathodic Protection – How Does Cathodic Protection Work

 Corrosion is a natural process that can deteriorate metal structures and
cause costly damage to your business.
 Pipeline Cathodic protection is a method for preventing corrosion on
underground pipelines and metallic structures. It is a technique used
to control the corrosion of a metal surface by making it the cathode of
an electrochemical cell. It’s one of the most effective methods for
preventing corrosion. It is commonly used on ships, offshore floaters,
subsea equipment, harbors, pipelines, tanks, etc.

 Cathodic protection connects the base metal at risk (steel) to a
sacrificial metal that corrodes in lieu of the base metal. The technique
of providing cathodic protection to steel preserves the metal by
providing a highly active metal that can act as an anode and provide
free electrons. By introducing these free electrons, the active metal
sacrifices its ions and keeps the less active steel from corroding.
 The goal is to cease the effect of corrosion attack.

Cathodic protection – a specialist operation
Cathodic protection is used extensively to protect critical infrastructure
from corrosion. For example:
• It is legally mandated for gas and oil pipelines to ensure their safe operation.
• Offshore gas and renewable energy structures are effectively mandated to
receive effective cathodic protection by their certification bodies.
• Ships benefit from extended dry-docking rules if they have effective
cathodic protection.
• The life of concrete bridges and structures affected by chlorides, from deicing salts or marine exposure, is extended by cathodic protection.
• Newly constructed, reinforced concrete structures in severe exposure
conditions also have extended life when cathodic protection is used.
