Signs of Chemical Reaction/Change – NOTES – Lesson 1 Chemical Reaction - Elements react and bond together to form a molecule during a chemical reaction. - A chemical reaction is the process that leads to the change of one set of chemical substances into another. - Molecules can break down into pure elements or change into different molecules during a chemical reaction as well. - A chemical reaction is a chemical change. - During a chemical change, one set of substances transforms into different chemical substances with different properties. - During a chemical reaction, a chemical change takes place. New substances are formed with different properties. - The substances that undergo the transformation are called the reactants. - The substances that form during a chemical reaction are called products. - Atoms interact with each other during a chemical reaction. During this interaction, bonds between atoms are created and/or broken. - New substances are formed because bonds between atoms are created and/or broken. - You cannot actually see bonds forming or breaking during a chemical reaction. - However, you might observe certain things that indicate a chemical change is taking place Observing a Chemical Reaction - There are 6 observations you might make to indicate a chemical change (and thus, a chemical reaction) is taking place: - These changes indicate a new substance with different properties has formed. Signs of a Chemical Change/Reaction 1. A precipitate forms. A precipitate is when two liquids react & a solid forms at the bottom of the container. 2. Light. A burst of light or spark appears. 3. Temperature change. The temperature of the substance changes. 4. Bubbles appear. Bubbles indicate a gas has formed. 5. Odor. An odor develops. 6. Color change. The color of the substance changes.
