CHAPTER 9: ADVOCACY AGAINST CORRUPTION It’s quite infuriating that innocent individuals become victims of political agenda. I remember being horrified when the Maguindanao massacre was televised. So many people perished, slaughtered gruesomely. I feel sorry for the governor. His wife and sisters were included in the massacre which took 57 lives. I can’t imagine the sorrow and grief of the abandoned family of the victims. It’s been 12 years, I hope they are in a better disposition now. Although the people responsible for this outrageous killing are in prison, still, you cannot bring back the lives of those who died. I also don’t understand why some Filipinos continue to support government officials with bad reputation. This is a form of idolatry that blinds us from the truth. Corrupt officials continue to manipulate us because we let them do so. In our current political climate, you can see the colors that divide the Filipinos. Even in our own house, I can see who supports who. I think a country cannot easily extinguish corruption because corrupt officials are like mushrooms, they are everywhere and appear in groups. It is the responsibility of the citizens to be well-informed and continue to be vigilant of our surroundings. Civil conversation exists to voice out our beliefs and opinions. It’s okay to view different perspectives and accept beliefs that we thought are not true. But ultimately, don’t forget to pray to God for guidance and wisdom to overcome these challenges.
