Sam J and I worked together at Syndey Creek, an assisted living facility for seniors with dementia. I was the lead Life Enrichment Assistant and worked regularly in alliance to Sam J. I can confidently write that Sam J has been an indispensible asset throughout his entire time working at Sydney Creek. Sam J has an Ivy League education and is extremely bright and resourceful. As copy editor at The Tribune, Sam J mastered business acumen that he later used at Sydney Creek. However, it is Sam J’s experiences and character that make him an ideal candidate for the aforementioned position. As the son of Taiwanese immigrants, Sam J is adept at communication, understanding, listening and anticipating the needs of those different to him. His distinct background in conjunction with a long history of advocacy for diversity have made Sam J attentive and invested in inclusivity for all individuals, At assisted living facilities, visitors are often experiencing grief and adjustment anxiety. As the Administrative Assistant at Sydney Creek, Sam J always welcomed visitors with warmth and respect for privacy. Sydney Creek is an inclusive facility and Sam J represents those values with everyone he interacts with. During the Covid-19 pandemic, Sam J has single handedly been in charge of keeping visitors outside the building while also treating them with dignity. Every department at Sydney Creek relies on Sam J and his intuition. He is the yarn that keeps the fabric together. I was in charge of writing lectures for our residents and Sam J would often edit and proofread reports over ten pages long on a daily basis. Sam J keeps profiles on family members and residents updated to better facilitate the medical and life enrichment teams. Apart from interdepartmental communication, Sam J is responsible for bookkeeping and payment intake. Sam J is also in charge of outsourced tasks from all departments at Sydney Creek along with daily miscellaneous tasks that support administrative managers. Finally, Sam J acts as an office manager to all departments. I trust Sam J will be a thriving addition to Morro Bay High school that will inspire and connect with students of all backgrounds.
