To: Lofton Barnes From: Calvin Russ Date: June 7, 2020 Subject: Marketing Coordinator Application Dear Lofton, My name is Calvin Russ and I am currently in my final year of my Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from the University of Florida. I am interested in applying for your Marketing Coordinator position, requisition number MARKE01017. My skills in effective team communication and reliable judgment and decision making will be very beneficial to your organization. Effective Team Communication Although virtually every company emphasizes teamwork, I discovered that Village Farms lists effective communication within a team as one of its core values. I played team sports in high school and learned quickly how crucial it is for every person to be on the same page, and it is no different in the business world. Throughout my internships, I experienced both good and bad examples of team communication. In my first internship, the leader assigned tasks to every member and left them to complete these tasks on their own. Some members did not complete their tasks correctly and the manager did not check up on them. This lack of communication wasted much time and effort. However, at my second internship, the leader not only delegated responsibility but constantly communicated with each member to ensure that everyone knew their part and how it contributed to our goal. The environment created by this manager encouraged proactive communication from all members. Because of these experiences, I have learned that effective communication within groups is derived from proactive members. This trait will keep everyone from your company onboard, which helps teams work much more efficiently. Reliable Judgment and Decision Making Another key skill I have learned is good judgment and decision making. Decision making is a skill that improves over time with constant practice, and I made many decisions throughout my two internships. I completed as much research as I could in the time allotted to make the best decision. Afterward, I ran it by at least one other person to determine if my logic was sound. Once my decision is made, I must evaluate it, which is the most important step. Even if I made a satisfactory decision, there can still be room for improvement. Incorrect decisions are the ones I learn most from and therefore spend more time evaluating. Failure to inspect wrong decisions leads to making the same mistakes over, or making even worse decisions. Through my experiences, reflection is the most important aspect of decision making, and that is why I perform it after every opportunity. This skill will help your company in making more reliable decisions. The ability to communicate effectively in a team environment and reliable decision making will greatly benefit Village Farms’ vision of growing organic, environmentally friendly foods. I have great admiration and respect for your company and have no doubt you will continue to succeed.
