Introduce, explain about the procedure and gain consent 2. Prepare the equipment in sterile field 3. Position the patient in supine position 4. Hold the penis vertically, retract the foreskin and clean the penis. 5. Insert local anaesthetic gel into the meatus and wait for 2 to 3 minutes for the effect 6. Insert the catheter slowly to the meatus, and advance gradually into the bladder. 7. Inflate the ballon with 10ml water to secure the catheter. 8. Once the bladder is fully inflated, slowly withdraw the catheter until resistance noted. Plastic apron Two pairs of sterile gloves Sterile water-filled syringe (10ml) for inflation of the catheter balloon. 0.9% sodium chloride (10mls) Lidocaine (1%) anaesthetic lubricating gel for insertion into the urethra.
